@IdRatherBeSkiing Next week is 1989, there will be plenty of my wife's favorite songs (from when she was a kid) that will make me do a Beavis face #debbiegibson #tiffany #nkotb
Probably a Whiney there as well. Think I will miss that one and just read the list here. Only countdown year worse for me is 1988.

Good for an '89 countdown. I usually expect much worst.

26. Funky Cold Medina - Tone Loc

Alan saying "Locked After Dark" as the album name. Should we start calling him Tone Lock?

23. Straight Up - Paula Abdul

Mark Goodman was the one mentioning Martha Quinn this time =)

8. Walk The Dinosaur - Was (Not Was)

Much cooler than the Electric Slide or Macarena.

#55 Fixx "Driven Out"
#78 Traveling Wilburys "End Of The Line"
#93 Cheap Trick "Never Had A Lot To Lose"

It's a sin these weren't top 40, especially compared to some that did make it.

#80 Will To Power "Fading Away"

Sounds like Information Society, until the vocals anyway.

#92 Peter Schilling "The Different Story (World Of Lust And Crime)"

Pete's synthpop + Enigma's pan flute = interesting combination. Pete also hits quite the high note toward the end!

Won't make the top 40
#54 Boy Meets Girl "Bring Down the Moon"
#55 Fixx "Driven Out"
#56 Pasadenas "Tribute (Right On)"
#57 Simply Red "It's Only Love"
#60 Carly Simon "Let The River Run"
#64 New Edition "Can You Stand The Rain"
#70 Steve Winwood "Hearts On Fire"
#71 Kenny G "We've Saved The Best For Last"
#72 Robbie Nevil "Somebody Like You"

I am surprised and it is a sin. I think this is their best song (at least in my opinion).

Kon Kan was a project of Canadian record producer/remixer Barry Harris. I Beg Your Pardon, their first single, included samples of Rose Garden, Disco Nights and Get Up & Boogie. Kevin Wynne was the vocalist. The song won a Juno award in 1990 for best dance recording. Joe South, who had written Rose Garden in 1967, was given songwriting credit alongside Barry Harris on I Beg Your Pardon. The first artist to record Rose Garden was Billy Joe Royal, who had hits with four other Joe South songs: Hush, Yo-Yo, I Knew You When and Down In The Boondocks. (Yes, Yo-Yo later became a huge hit for the Osmonds.) Okay, enough mind-numbing trivia. Here is the original version of Rose Garden:

Slipping a mickey into someone's drink to get them to sleep with you. I see Bill Cosby all over this one.

And why the transphobia? Don't you want a girl with a little extra something?

Today's Useless Trivia

(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) is one of only two top-40 hits to include two pair of parentheses in the title. The other is Earl Grant's 1958 hit The End. The earliest pressings of the recording showed the title as (At) The End (Of A Rainbow). Roy Hamilton and Jim Nabors also recorded the song and the label of their recordings showed the full title with the parentheses.

The only other such songs I know of are (She's Only) Fourteen (And I Know I'm Going To Jail by Sonny Shorrock and (Get A) Grip (On Yourself) by the Stranglers.

Last night I dreamt of a countdown. It all seemed like yesterday. Not far away.

Songs burned my ears like the devil. 1987 was not that great a year.

40: SERIOUS - DONNA ALLEN

If this song wasn't so terrible, it could be this board's theme song. "Let's talk seriou...Sirius".

23: AS WE LAY - SHIRLEY MURDOCK

19: LIVIN' ON A PRAYER - BON JOVI

Livin' on my hair!

NPR Rewrote Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ to ‘Living on My Hair’

8: THE FINAL COUNTDOWN - EUROPE

It made the top ten? Wow!

7: COME GO WITH ME - EXPOSE

The beginning of the end for 80s music, really. After this, single name pop tarts and single name pop tart groups would rule the airwaves. Suddenly, what you see below was every-damn-where...

#59 Ratt "Dance"

This album is where Ratt lost me (in fact, several hair bands lost me around 86/87/88). But they got me back with 1989's Reach For The Sky.

#65 Beastie Boys "Brass Monkey"

A #48 peak, their 4th biggest hit (Party, Intergalactic, Hey Ladies). I had no idea. If someone asked me to name the Beastie's four biggest hits, I would never have suspected this one.

#86 Night Ranger "The Secret of My Success"

Forgot about this song. Used to hear it all the time back in the day when the movie was hot.

#93 Pseudo Echo "Living in a Dream"

Peaked at #57. Only other US hit "Funky Town" #1. One hit wonder? I'm inclined to say yes, but it's a close call.

Won't make the top 40:
#46 Paul Lekakis "Boom Boom (Let's Go Back To My Room)"
#49 Herb Alpert "Keep Your Eye On Me"
#51 Survivor "How Much Love"
#56 Gregory Abbott "I Got The Feelin' (It's Over)"
#57 Cover Girls "Show Me"
#58 Georgio "Sexappeal"
#59 Ratt "Dance"
#60 Sammy Hagar "Winner Takes It All"
#61 Run DMC "It's Tricky"
#65 Beastie Boys "Brass Monkey"
#68 Sheila E "Hold Me"
#74 Lone Justice "Shelter"
#76 Freddie Jackson "Have You Ever Loved Somebody"
#77 David & David "Ain't So Easy"
#81 Mel & Kim "Showing Out"
#84 Luther Vandross "There's Nothing Better Than Love"
#86 Night Ranger "The Secret of My Success"
#87 Samantha Fox "Do Ya Do Ya (Wanna Please Me)"
#88 Anita Baker "Same Ole Love"
#90 Julian Cope "World Shut Your Mouth"
#91 Corey Hart "Dancin' With My Mirror"
#93 Pseudo Echo "Living in a Dream"
#94 Starpoint "He Wants My Body"
#95 Georgia Satellites "Battleship Chains"
#97 a-ha "Cry Wolf"
#98 Venetians "So Much For Love"
#100 Paul Simon "The Boy In The Bubble"

I found a few songs I like. While I find that 1986 countdowns typically give me a lot of songs I like, once you get into 1987, there's a lot of songs I'd prefer to avoid mixed in with the good ones.

1987 slightly better than 1989 which is slightly better than 1988 which is the worst year IMHO.

Several different captions according to facebook memes.
An apple on a pear for example.

My own custom rewrite is Schnauzer on a stair.

#93 Pseudo Echo "Living in a Dream"

Yes. A one hit wonder remake of a one hit wonder to start with. I don't Lipps Inc ever filled up their greatest hits album. Side note: Tony Bazil has a greatest hits album. As does Nick Lowe. Both are one hit wonders by most definitions.

No surprises in the won't make list.
