40. FOREVER MINE - THE O'JAYS

When a maaaaaaaaan loves a woman...

38. TRAIN, TRAIN - BLACKFOOT

My son starting singing "I got a little change in my pocket goin' jing-a ling-a liiIIiing" over this one.

37. RAPPER'S DELIGHT - SUGARHILL GANG

Only on this week's and next week's top 40's. Drops to #95 on 1/19.

35. ROMEO'S TUNE - STEVE FORBERT

Agreed! A personal classic here too.

29. DEJA VU - DIONNE WARWICK

I'm experiencing deja vu hearing it... for the first time in what feels like a million years.

23. WAIT FOR ME - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES

I know the live version better, because that's what they put on 'Rock And Soul Part 1'. So the studio version sounds foreign to me.

21. NO MORE TEARS - BARBRA STREISAND/DONNA SUMMER

Disco Babs!

11. COOL CHANGE - LITTLE RIVER BAND

Wow haven't heard this in a long long time!

5. DO THAT TO ME ONE MORE TIME - THE CAPTAIN AND TENNILLE

2. ESCAPE (THE PINA COLADA SONG) - RUPERT HOLMES

Never cared much for this song until one day I actually listened to the lyrics. Now I think it's pretty good.

#60 Inmates "Dirty Water"

"Ohhhhh London you're my home!" ... ??

Will never make the top 40
#47 Suzi Quatro "She's In Love With You" (#41 peak!)

#33 John Cougar "I Need A Lover"
#37 Anne Murray "Broken Hearted Me"
#39 Richie Furay "I Still Have Dreams"

Songs that made the top 40 earlier than the last week of 1979, so we'll never hear these either (this week's position):
#84 Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star"
#95 Kermit (Jim Henson) "Rainbow Connection"
#99 Fleetwood Mac "Tusk"

Songs that will fall out of the top 40 next week, so this is the only VJ 40 we'll ever hear them on (next week's position):
#47 Alan Parsons Project "Damned If I Do"
#59 M "Pop Muzik"
#85 Crystal Gale "Half The Way"
#99 Eagles "Heartache Tonight" (...as Nina would say, 'dropping a WHOPPING 65 spots!')

@IdRatherBeSkiing Originally I only really listened to the hook of Escape the first zillion times I heard it, and it sounded like a generic pick-up line song. Eventually I really listened to the verses and thought, even though it's a bit silly for a husband and wife to chuckle when they discover they've responded to each others' personal ad to cheat on one other (in reality it would be a blame-game shit-show), it was actually a fun story to listen to.

@HecticArt Agreed!

It was The Police’s first #1 song in the UK, Ireland and Spain and reached the top 5 in six other countries, but only reached #74 in the US.

His 3rd hit was about people playing phone tag with an answering machine and professing their love but being cutoff. I remember listening to the AT40 countdown and Kasey explaining what an answering machine was. Pretty funny.

LOL @ everything above re: Holmes.

TIL his actual name is David Goldstein. After browsing a half-dozen bios, none of them explain why the heck he changed his name to Rupert. For me, that's the second worst first name I can think of - with Englebert taking the prize. In fact, he takes the prize for worst first AND last name.

re: Answering Machines, I remember circa 1981 when my step-father building an answering machine from a kit and we recording that first outgoing message. We were the first people we knew to own one. It sat next to our Radio Shack TRS-80 computer (nicknamed 'the Trash-80'), which you used a cassette player to load software from. Took longer to load the game than to beat it. </nostalgia-detour>

These songs are all very familiar. I realized none of them were top 10 but I would have thought top 40 for all of them.

And was it just me or were there much more than usual number of hits this week on top 100 that would never make top 40?

Also a little quirk of the chart, Escape was the #1 song last week (last week of 1979). It fell to #2 this week but would return next week for 1 more week making it also the 2nd #1 song of 1980. KC was a 1 week wonder and the first #1. A lot of people think Escape was both the last of 1979 and also the first of 1980.

For me personally, I only know four of the songs listed under 'wont make the top 40' (at least that's how many I recognize by artist/title).

As for why there are so many 'never make its', in the past I haven't always listed every song that didn't make the top 40. I usually just put the ones that at least I recognize the artist. For example, if I see something like "Yolandi and Yodelers", I may just skip over it. On this countdown, I had extra time that day and decided to post all of them, especially since I figured they are all songs from the 70s technically - it being the first week of 1980 - so we may never see those artist names again here in the 80s thread.

However, Billboard's site is clunky and loaded with mistakes (and bad links and missing links and and and...), so there could be some that aren't correct?

Good 11
Okay 9
Bad 20

Last year I put:
Good 12
Ok 5
Bad 23

Hard evidence that the more I listen to these songs, the more I can tolerate them.

I've already commented on most of these songs:

Once

Twice

Three tiiiimes a lady

So instead, here are some comments on songs from the newly expanded "won't make it" list:

#46 Billy Squier "My Kinda Lover"
#55 Bob Seger "Feel Like A Number (Live)"

Woulda thought these would make the top 40.

#48 Greg Lake "Let Me Love You Once"

Horrible. But I love "I Believe In Father Xmas" and played it a lot last month, like I do every year. There are a some great covers out there of it by Vertical Horizon and Joe Merrick. The U2 cover is okay.

#59 Balance "Falling In Love"

Barf! The polar opposite of "Breaking Away".

#65 Steve Carlisle "WKRP In Cincinnati"

Guilty pleasure. Never really watched the show though.

#69 Rush "Closer To The Heart"

I like the live version on A Show Of Hands better than the original.

#73 John Hall Band "Crazy (Keep On Falling)"

Is John Hall an alias of Eric Clapton's?

#74 Kiss "A World Without Heroes"

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

#83 Teddy Pendergrass "You're My Latest, My Greatest Inspiration"

Who did the pose first? Thriller-era Jacko or Teddy?
