33. NEW WORLD MAN - RUSH

I find the story told about this song to be fascinating. They were done the album and needed an extra filler song to balance out side B vs A particularly for the cassette. They whipped this song together in 1 day. It is their ONLY top 40 song (hard to believe given all the better songs they have done). A song that wasn't really supposed to be is their only top 40. Had this been 20 years later, it wouldn't have been done at all because nobody would care about side A & B.

The Top 40 is dead to me.

26. THE ONE YOU LOVE - GLENN FREY

Sax is as annoying as Careless Whisper. Maybe worse.

19. WHAT'S FOREVER FOR - MICHAEL MARTIN MURPHEY

17. UP WHERE WE BELONG - JOE COCKER AND JENNIFER WARNES

My friend's son, his roommate and I all picked Jack & Diane as our guess for #1. To break the tie, the son picked this one.

5. WHO CAN IT BE NOW - MEN AT WORK

This was my tiebreaker.

2. ABRACADABRA - THE STEVE MILLER BAND

This was the roommate's tiebreaker. He wins.

#64 Paul McCartney "Tug Of War"
#79 Missing Persons "Destination Unknown"
#83 Eddie Money "Shakin'"
#94 Huey Lewis & The News "Workin' For A Livin'"
#96 Clash "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"

Hard to believe these didn't make the top 40

#84 Sheena Easton "Machinery"

Wow. If there could be an early 80s polar opposite to "Morning Train", I think this is it. Musically, it's a poor attempt to mimic Devo.

Will never reach the top 40
#42 Don Henley "Johnny Can't Read"
#52 Motels "Take The L"
#58 Stevie Wonder "Ribbon In The Sky"
#59 Donna Summer "State Of Independence"
#63 Go-Gos "Get Up And Go"
#64 Paul McCartney "Tug Of War"
#69 Bill Medley "Right Here And Now"
#70 Timothy B. Schmit "So Much In Love"
#71 Karla Bonoff "Please Be The One"
#74 Cliff Richard "The Only Way Out"
#76 Yaz "Situation"
#77 Bobby Caldwell "All Of My Love"
#79 Missing Persons "Destination Unknown"
#80 Bad Company "Electricland"
#81 Cheap Trick "She's Tight"
#83 Eddie Money "Shakin'"
#84 Sheena Easton "Machinery"
#86 Robert Plant "Burning Down One Side"
#87 Alabama "Close Enough To Perfect"
#92 Time "777-9311"
#94 Huey Lewis & The News "Workin' For A Livin'"
#96 Clash "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"
#98 Billy Preston "I'm Never Gonna Say Goodbye"
#99 Dolly Parton "I Will Always Love You"
#100 Steve Winwood "Still In The Game"

#42 Don Henley "Johnny Can't Read"
#83 Eddie Money "Shakin'"
#96 Clash "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"

These ones surprised me.

Don Henley did get a lot of airplay in Canada with Johnny Can't Read. Looking it up, it didn't even make hot 100 in Canada. Maybe it was liked by the PD of the local radio station I was listening to in Saskatchewan at the time. Still one of my favourites of his.

I am always surprised when one of my favorite bands (R.E.M. in this instance) gets listed outside the top 40, but then I realize they never were big chart toppers to begin with. Most music acts I like aren't.

Fall On Me, while a great tune from REM, is not a chart worthy song.
