Here's my two cents for the week.
40. Tracie Spencer – Symptoms Of True Love.
@sadchild - There's was some discussion about Tracie and this track on Facebook too. I theorized that the song wasn't in rotation on MTV. I remembered her as an artist, but I had to watch the video to remember the song. She was 13 and secured a record contract after appearing on Star Search. I ran across her performing on a German TV show too. It was a fun pop song, but nothing out of the ordinary. Peak positions: Hot 100: 38, R&B: 11, Germany: 24.
It's fascinating when a track has enough exposure to make the 40, but not enough to remain memorable.
37. Erasure – Chains Of Love
Good stuff from Erasure! Another good song from Erasure is Sometimes. I heard it on a local radio show that featured UK top 40 songs when I was a teen.
34. Robert Palmer – Early In The Morning
Robert Palmer remade several R&B songs. In the case, the GAP band reached the 40 with the original too.
26. Vixen – Edge Of A Broken Heart
I forgot all about this all girl hair band.
21. INXS – Never Tear Us Apart
This video was played constantly on MTV. The view of Prague was amazing so I never got tired of it.
19. When In Rome – The Promise
This was a really good song (in my humble opinion
14. Giant Steps – Another Lover
I'm pretty sure they fell in the one hit wonder category.
3. Kylie Minogue – The Loco-Motion
Early Kylie. In the US, we missed the Jason Donovan/Kyle duets and her rise to fame.
Will never reach the top 40
#46 Luther Vandross "Any Love"
This was Big R&B hit. I could have easily seen this in the 40.
#60 Siouxsie & The Banshees "Peek-A-Boo"
I thought this made the 40 too, but I realized the video was in heavy rotation. Cities in Dust is a better track from them.
#63 DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince "Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble"
This is an ominous sign of things to come (Parents just don't understand). I'm glad Beavis is on-call.
#64 L'Trimm "Cars With The Boom"
This was pretty popular especially the video. I'm not sure if their Valley Girl sound was authentic or not, but the song was catchy as hell. They had another song call Drop that bottom which used the same formula as Cars.
@sadchild - Your assessment about the connection to Salt n Pepa is very interesting. The UK has their version too. The Wee Papa Girl Rappers. We need a UK
equivalent of Beavis.
#69 Tracy Chapman "Baby Can I Hold You"
This is a solid track by Tracy.
#85 Cameo "You Make Me Work"
The beginning of the song sounds just like Word up which was probably intentional. It was a top ten R&B hit.
#88 Al B Sure "Killing Me Softly
@IdRatherBeSkiing - I agree this was a bad remake. Al B. Sure didn't have the voice to do this justice.
#90 Kim Wilde "You Came"
I never heard this one. It peaked at #41. It was much bigger overseas. This reminds me of the discussion about Tracie Spencer.
#93 Good Question "Got A New Love"
@sadchild - I used to tape music videos and I had this captured. I never heard this one on the radio.
#96 Eighth Wonder "Cross My Heart"
I listened to this out of curiosity. The track isn't bad at all.
