I knew Escape went back to #1, but I didn't realize it held the spot again all the way until Rock With You. Yeah, you're right, he was closer than I thought. One song off (like I was).

Wow pretty sure I haven't heard this since the mid-80s.

My friend's son's guess at #1. I almost picked this one.

These are surprises. That last not so much as they are Canadian.

#90 Bette Midler "Beast Of Burden"

Please tell me this is not the Stones song done by Bette Midler. Insert Bevus & Butthead here if so.

I really thought this would have made it to about 20 or so.

I would have thought this would have made it to the top 10.

I didn't think it would break the top 40 with the buzz-saw guitar, but I thought it would have been close.
That Night Ranger one surprised me also, it was all over the radio during the 80's, and all over Classic Rock radio later.

MIDDLE OF THE ROAD - PRETENDERS

The absolute best driving song, EVER!!!

I have to be very careful not to bury the speedometer when this song comes on.

Been a favorite for years.

One thing I noticed about Alan Hunter's comment on "I Guess That is Why They Call it the Blues". I think this was probably the 3rd release from "Too Low For Zero" preceded by "I'm Still Standing" and "Kiss The Bride". Yet Alan said it was the debut. This makes no sense given "Too Low For Zero" was released in 1983. I check the billboard charts and see "I'm Still Standing" on the chart in the late spring. However, when I check Wiki I see "I Guess That Is Why They Call it the Blues" as the first release. I think this is in error unless they released that first in Europe or something. I guess we know where Alan Hunter does his research.

Funny, you didn't list it on your old thread. I think I'll resurrect it, there are a lot of songs to be added.

I was just looking at the actual Billboard chart, Thriller is debuting this week in the Top 100 @ #20. It only attained a peak of #4 I think. With such a debut that is odd. It is also one of the biggies from the Thriller album and most of the other ones did reach #1.

Billy Idol "Rebel Yell" #46 PEAK

Yeah this surprises me too, I thought the song was bigger than that. It also surprises me that "Eyes WO A Face" made #4. I had no clue that one was so huge. I woulda thought they'd both peak around #30 like "Flesh 4 Fantasy" did.

Night Ranger "(You Can Still) Rock In America" #51 PEAK

I woulda thought this would scrape the top 40 for a week and day.

Motley Crue "Looks That Kill" #54 PEAK

Sounds about right. But being the song that kicked their career into high gear, I woulda thought it woulda topped the Rock Chart. But nope, only reached #12. The bigger surprise, however, is that "Home Sweet Home" peaked at #89. I woulda bet money that song was a top 40 hit, but alas didn't even come close. Can't believe that one tanked, but "Smokin' In The Boys Room" went top 20. I woulda thought the opposite.

Bette Midler "Beast Of Burden"

Sure is the Stones! I remember the video back in the day featuring Mick Jagger. Bette stradles Mick and says something like "Stay and watch me perform your song!"

Elton John "I Guess That is Why They Call it the Blues"

I thought the exact same thing. I've seen many instances where their research relies exclusively on Wikipedia. "Standing" peaked in July 1983. "Kiss The Bride" peaked in October 1983. "Blues" peaked in January 1984. I knew he was wrong simply because I moved from NH to Mass at the end of summer 1983, and I remember listening to "Standing" in NH and "Blues" in Mass.

Michael Jackson "Thriller"

Yeah I was surprised when I learned "Thriller" didn't hit #1 too.

Exact same countdown last year. Meanwhile we haven't had an '82 countdown in over 4 months.

Not much new to say, old comments are here

My friend's son picked this one as his guess for #1

3. COULD'VE BEEN - TIFFANY

1. SEASONS CHANGE - EXPOSE

My friend's roommate picked this one as his guess for #1

[#61 George Michael "Faith"]

This was my guess. Wrong single, two months off. Whoops.

#76 Depeche Mode "Never Let Me Down Again"

Didn't know it then. Like it better than most of the songs on that top 40 now.

Won't reach the top 40:
#43 Dan Hill "Never Thought (That I Could Love)"
#51 Communards "Never Can Say Goodbye"
#54 Carly Simon "All I Want Is You"

My two cents: The 40 wasn't too intriguing for me. Most of the songs are pretty well known.

40. LIVE MY LIFE (FROM THE FILM "HIDING OUT") - BOY GEORGE
I totally missed this one.

Won't reach the top 40:

#43 Dan Hill "Never Thought (That I Could Love)"
I read an interesting article about him recently.

#55 Buster Poindexter "Hot Hot Hot"
I remember this video was heavy rotation.

#60 Elisa Fiorillo "How Can I Forget You"
I wasn't aware she had more songs like the 100.

#63 Prince "Hot Thing"
I wasn't aware this was released as a single. I don't think there was a video for this one.

#69 REM "It's the End of the World as We Know It"
I'm surprised this didn't make the 40.

#76 Depeche Mode "Never Let Me Down Again"
I'm really surprised about this one too.

#89 Pepsi & Shirlie "All Right Now"
I had no idea they charted in the US. They were backup singers for Wham.

#94 Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle "Without You"
This came before A Whole New World which is interesting.

#95 Eurythmics "I Need A Man"
This was cool song.

#100 Georgio "Lover's Lane"
He wasn't too talented.
