I liked around 24 songs on this one.

I think I mentioned it before, Emotional Rescue is my most hated Stones hit. Mick's vocals on that one annoy me so much.

It looks like they have done this countdown before.

Ironic after discussion of Xanadu on several threads this countdown is littered with Xanadu songs.

5.3 for me on this countdown. I never would have made it through.

16: ONE IN A MILLION YOU - LARRY GRAHAM
Lou's less successful brother?
#42 Pat Benatar "You Better Run"
#62 Peter Gabriel "Games Without Frontiers"
Both are shockers.
#72 Kings "Switchin' To Glide/This Beat Goes On"
That's too bad. It's such a fun tune(s).
#84 Genesis "Turn It On Again"
That's insane.
That one is pretty hurtful. Most of his stuff is not quite so pointed. Good decision on Al's part.
Agreed. That one stings a bit.

Here's the full Weird Al quote:

Somehow Billy Joel heard a copy of it way back then. Some magazine show did a segment on Billy Joel, and they played him a little of the song, and he listened to it and… he had some kind of snide comment about it. I could tell I kinda hurt his feelings a little bit. I thought, Oh, gosh. You know… [Laughs] I didn’t wanna get on Billy Joel’s bad side. That’s maybe where my whole nonbiting thing started. I go through pains not to step on people’s toes or make jokes at their expense. If I can help it. I still do from time to time—I break that rule all the time. But my general policy is if you can get a laugh without stepping on somebody’s toes, that’s a better way to go. So that was part of it. I didn’t wanna hurt Billy Joel’s feelings.

40: BREAK IT TO ME GENTLY - JUICE NEWTON

First time on the VJ? Hopefully the last.

39: THE ONE YOU LOVE - GLENN FREY

Nina said "That was Glenn Frey at #32 and before that was Juice Newton at #40". Uh, try 39.

32: VALLEY GIRL - FRANK ZAPPA

At the end of this song, my son said, "I didn't need that in my life." But hey I like it. For sher.

1: HARD TO SAY I'M SORRY - CHICAGO

I picked this one! I remembered from the last time they did '82 that this would be coming up soon. Not sure what the other two people I compete with chose yet.

Oh and this...

I think the Clocks tune was more of a regional hit ( with that region being the Midwest ). I completely forgot about it until I was reminded of it a couple years back. The album was actually released on CD, somewhat surprisingly. I own it. But after seeing the video, I got a pretty good idea of why it never hit nationally. Yikes.

A little surprised that the Huey song wasn't a Top 40 hit, but it almost was.

Funny to see how "Words" was a Top 100 hit, because at the station I worked at it was a "red" category track - which meant it could only be played from 9pm-6am. Now you hear it all the time.

Overall, I was surprised by the number of songs in this 40 that we DIDN'T play where I worked, even though I started there just 2 years later. I counted at least 16 songs. But it was early enough in the decade that the formats where still pretty blended ( lotta Adult Contemporary in the 40, which would shrink as the decade went on ).

You used to not hear AC/DC until evenings. Now you hear it in the morning. They either threw away the rule book or no longer apply it to songs that have aged.

That's true - a lot of the hard rock/metal stuff we played was night-time only. Stuff that was a legit hit song like "You Shook Me All Night Long" could be played in the daytime, but that was about it.

I found some more information on the Clocks too:

From Wichita, Kansas, U.S.
Tribute site: The Clocks

It looks like "She Looks a Lot Like You" had an earlier recording. KY102 was a Kansas City radio station (based on what I could dig up).
