The first commercially-available 45 was a re-issue of Eddy Arnold's 1948 number-one country hit Texarkana Baby. The 45 was released on March 31, 1949 -- on green vinyl! RCA used seven different colors, each for a different type of music. The first actual 45-rpm record was a demo explaining the new recording format. It was titled Whirl-Away -- and looky! Gerry Beckley, Dan Peek and Dewey Bunnell met in 1968 while attending Central High School in Bushey Park, London. Their respective fathers were all in the Air Force and the school was primarily for children of military personnel stationed in England. They and two other teenagers formed a band called Daze. When the other two left the group, Beckley, Peek and Bunnell continued as a trio. Renamed America, they performed regularly at a London club called The Roundhouse.

America became well-known in London and signed a recording contract with Warner Brothers. They recorded an album and were planning to release I Need You as their first single. Then they decided to record one more song, A Horse With No Name (originally titled Desert Song), written by Dewey Bunnell and inspired by his homesickness for California and his memory of the desert near Vandenberg Air Force Base, where he lived for a short time. The song went to number one in the US and #3 in the UK.

Mister Skiing, if you don't like the original song, then you probably also will not like America's live version with Christopher Cross. Here it is anyway:

I don't like any version of this song. You can thank my roommate in summer of 1981 on a summer job in Kindersley, SK. He thought he was a singer and guitar player but what he really excelled at was hash consumption and butchering this song over and over and over. The song wasn't great to begin with but memories of this torture come flooding back whenver I hear this song (and thanks to buttons on radios and off switches I rarely have to).

And why the fuck couldn't they just name the damn horse? Call it George.

Terry Jacks was a member of The Chessmen, a band fron Vancouver, British Columbia, who had a local hit in 1965 with The Way You Fell. The song, written by Terry, reached #4 on the CFUN Top 40.



In 1970, Terry and his then-wife Susan, calling themselves The Poppy Family, had a #2 hit with Which Way You Goin' Billy. Jacques Brel had written and recorded Le Moribond ("The Dying Man") in 1961. Three years later, the Kingston Trio recorded an English-language version of the song. It was Seasons In The Sun, with lyrics by Rod McKuen. Terry produced some sessions for the Beach Boys in 1973 and talked them into the recording the song. When they decided not to release it, Terry recorded his own version. It went to number one in Canada, the US and the UK. Here is Jacques Brel's original recording:

This post is very interesting. I just read it word for word and video for video on another site. There are 4 possibilities of this occurring:

Your first guess is correct. You and I are among a small number of people who belong to both DRC and XMFan. I hesitate to post the video of a 1969 song on a '70s discussion thread but I will do so, just for you, because I know you will understand it.
