Terry Jacks was a member of The Chessmen, a band fron Vancouver, British Columbia, who had a local hit in 1965 with The Way You Fell. The song, written by Terry, reached #4 on the CFUN Top 40.
In 1970, Terry and his then-wife Susan, calling themselves The Poppy Family, had a #2 hit with Which Way You Goin' Billy. Jacques Brel had written and recorded Le Moribond ("The Dying Man") in 1961. Three years later, the Kingston Trio recorded an English-language version of the song. It was Seasons In The Sun, with lyrics by Rod McKuen. Terry produced some sessions for the Beach Boys in 1973 and talked them into the recording the song. When they decided not to release it, Terry recorded his own version. It went to number one in Canada, the US and the UK. Here is Jacques Brel's original recording:
