Join the club. I know siriuslyheather and mrpacs are in the same boat. It's damn cold. At least I'm able to impose on people for hot showers, and we have power at my office.

The utility company won't give a restoration estimate.

The damage seems worse than Irene, but it does not seem to be over as wide of an area.

Ok, paid an electrician to come over for a quick and dirty fix for the boiler, looks real hack job like but it works for now. Much better now.

After Irene, I was planning on getting one this coming Spring once all the hype (and related price gouging) from that storm died down.

The thing is, once I plunk down the cash for the generator, I'm guaranteed to not need it.

If you have the money I would recommend a standby generator. They are expensive but worth it.

More and more it seems like a question of time before one would be needed. My luck is like Lime's, If I get one, I won't need it. It IS a lot of cash to plunk down, but having it around to use once or twice has got to make it worth the dough.

We endured a 17 day power outage in 2008 after Gustav... miserable! A generator did make things quite a bit easier than it could have been...

I said "once I buy a generator I won't need it"

I've needed it 3 times in 12 months!! 4 or 5 days each.

So of course Now that I paid a guy to come hook it up......power comes back today!

If your power has gone out that often, I'd buy one for sure!

Since buying one that will power my entire house I have only needed it once. This is once in 4 years. Before that I borrowed one almost twice a year due to outages.

Are they ever gonna bury the power lines in the northeast? This seems to happen 2-3 times a year. With all the emergency service that's needed, I would think the cost would be worth it.

BTW I wish power/cable/telephone was all buried so we wouldn't have to look at the damn poles and lines anymore. Less outages too.

I went about 72 hours without power back in 2008. Luckily, our stove and hot water are gas.

Hopefully your pipes don't break...that's nasty business, right there.

We should be OK. It's getting up into the 50s during the day and the sun is out. If you have several consecutive days with high temps in the 20s, then you could have a problem. But even a day or two of cold weather should not be an issue. We should be OK this time around, but if this was the dead of winter, there would be serious issues.

Next time I'll be all set.

This time I had the generator running:
TV
Internet
Fridge
Electric space heater
power to charge anything I needed
Lights

Next time I'll be set with:
Power to the oil burner for heat
A hotplate I ordered from Amazon
A toaster oven.

It'll be just like normal assuming no one steals the generator (and it keeps on working great! )

For anyone still without power, I drove to Indianapolis for work today and passed what must have been 25 or 30 power company bucket trucks heading east. There were 3 or 4 caravans that I saw. Some were from Arkansas and Kansas.
