While most of my childhood consisted of uncomfortable awkwardness, an especially awkward moment was at the end of every school dance, when you're slow dancing to either Stairway or Freebird, and the song transitions to the fast, hard rock part, and you just don't know what to do. If you're cool, you can quickly break into a fast dance, but I'd first try to slow dance faster, which doesn't work.
Those songs didn't have any place at a "dance" in the first place.
If they were expecting you kids to get stoned or drunk, that's another thing.

I just avoided school functions.
Prom was the only sanctioned event that I went to.
I went to one football game but met up with some friends and left after about a half hour.

It was always Stairway through my high school. I think it may have been a Canadian thing as referenced by this early Barenaked Ladies song "Grade 9".

Lyrics:
I've got a read leather tie and a pair of rubber pants
I put them on and I went to the high school dance
But Dad said I have to home by eleven
Aw man, I'm gonna miss "Stairway to Heaven".

Agreed. The only weird one (as I said before) is "Closer" by NIN. Great choice for the Alt 1000, but not the Hard Rock/Metal 1000. Replace it with "Head Like A Hole", "Wish" or "Last" and I'm on board.

Though I will say, for me personally, I think "Bulls On Parade" is one of RATM's weakest singles. After their debut hit me like an earthquake, that song was a dud IMO. RATM is one of many many examples for me of "Fantastic Debut" "Kinda Disappointing Sophomore" "Good Third Album". This formula also applies to Disturbed, Evanescence, Van Halen....

I'd also nix 41, 25 and 13 - but I understand why they're on there.
