The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me was written by Jim Weatherly, who also wrote The Need To Be, Midnight Train To Georgia, Neither One Of Us and several Ray Price country hits including Like Old Times Again, Roses & Love Songs, Storms Of Troubled Times, Farthest Thing From My Mind and Like A First Time Thing.
Steve Lawrence was the first to record The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me. Ray Price recorded it next. His version went to number one on the country chart in October 1973. Gladys Knight & The Pips' version reached #3 on the Hot 100, number one on the R&B chart and #10 on the adult contemporary chart in April 1974. The song has been recorded by more than 30 other artists including Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Ruth Brown, Dionne Warwick, Danny Thomas, Acker Bilk, John Davidson, Family Tree, the Blues Busters and the Rainy Day Singers. Jim Weatherly recorded his own version in 2003 for his Songs I've Written album.
