I like his collaborations. The one with Bloody Beetroots is good and the Knife Party stuff is a great blend of his wacky style with the electronic genre.

The track with Gary Clark Jr. is pretty wicked too.

Yes, and he did a song called Radium Girls, about the one's who painted the markers on watches, and got radioactive poisoning.

The Spectrum is playing Dustland by the Killers & Bruce Springsteen. The song, released on June 16, is a remake of the band's 2008 song A Dustland Fairytale. On Twitter, Brandon Flowers said he wrote the song while his mother was battling terminal brain cancer. He wanted to "acknowledge their [his parents'] sacrifices and maybe even catch a glimpse of just how strong love needs to be to make it in this world." Flowers credits Springsteen as his biggest influence – and here is their new collaboration.

I've gone on rants about The Spectrum (which I can't find now), but it's been a while; so here's my latest. I've been trying to listen a bit, with the pertinent word being "trying". They make it damn near impossible. Here's exhibit A:

1701184505870.png

What this shows is that a bunch of their most popular songs are played over 5 times a day (almost 7 times for the top one). And while it may not seem terrible to put the hot new hit on repeat, the way they take a block of several songs and repeat them the same godawful amount of times, means that you hear an entire sequence of songs over and over. For me, this totally kills the luster of the new Beatles song, or the latest Stones album. And keep in mind that like most channels, Spectrum has blocks of time where they do special segments - live broadcasts, guest hosts, themed blocks - so if you correct the math for those, the actual repeats-per-day figure goes up.

And the talk-up for each song is always the same. Every time they play the new U2 song, they mention their residency at the Sphere in Vegas, with the same chuckling commentary. Every time.

Speaking of the Stones, the Spectrum has started playing the latest single from Hackney Diamonds; an old-time gospel blues song with Lady Gaga wailing away for 7 minutes, plus Stevie Wonder on keyboards. It's a good example of what a backing band can add to a song. I have mixed feelings about the track. If I'm in the right mood, it's a cool song. It's also very derivative. But the biggest problem is that Mick doesn't have a pleasant voice. I'm not saying he doesn't have one now, I mean ever. He just doesn't have the right voice for a song like this. He's got more of a "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" kind of voice.

However, there's a live version of this on the YouTubes, where Gaga comes out (no big band instruments though), and they both give it a hell of an effort. I actually find it painful to watch, because it looks like Mick is about to pop an artery, and the whole band looks like the un-dead. So instead, here's the studio version, with the big band instrumentation

The Rolling Stones — Sweet Sounds of Heaven Feat. Lady Gaga & Stevie Wonder

At first, I wondered what you were grousing about. Those songs didn't look too bad.
Then I noticed the insane repeat frequency.
Damn.

I could listen for an hour or two, then try again in a week or so.
That may be how I try the channel again. It's been a while since I've checked it out.

5-6 times a day for a song is unbearable.

I remember when Ed Sheeran "Shape Of You" came out Hits 1 played it, on average, every 70 minutes. No exaggeration, I looked it up. But that station is aimed at a listening crowd with the attention span of a goldfish, so their 70 minutes is our 70 hours.

So about that...

Like you said, the "most played" list I posted isn't bad, it's just too repetitive. But when I'd try to listen for an hour or two, I also have to get through these

As you might have guessed, I'm not a big fan of the soccer mom lite-pop/rock genre. It's just too much of my new music listening time thrown away, for a minimal payoff.

Number of songs played from 1999-2013 (15 years): 1
It's 2 actually, but it's an interesting point. At first glance, that song list looks like a great mix. But it's based on a formula, which says they will play 8 U2 songs/day, 7 Talking Heads songs/day, 5 Van Morrison songs/day, 6 Tom Petty etc. They do play classic Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Killers, and Depeche Mode and The Cure from the 2000s. But they've got that formula. Plus, they won't play certain artists that appear on other channels. Very little Steely Dan, for example.

And then there's these artists they latch onto, and never fucking let go. Like Mt. Joy, or Caamp, or Noah Kahan, or Hozier, or Brittany Howard. Not that they're all bad (Brittany's OK), but they will never not play her on a consistent basis, even if she's got nothing going on. It's that formula thing.

That's the thing that always bugged me about the Spectrum (otherwise a fine station) was taking one new song and playing it. Every. Hour!

I first noticed this when - out of the blue - they just started playing "Wavin' Flag" by K'naan off the hook, I guess about a dozen years ago. The popularity was related to World Cup soccer, but I didn't know or care. I was just like "Who is this artist? Where did he come from? And why is it suddenly the #1 song?" And then eventually it stopped, and I've never heard the guy since.

Well, so far, I haven't heard it on The Spectrum, or seen it on their playlists. Seems unlikely that it would appear down the road.
