Seeing someone post "Miller Beer" in the WAI thread reminded me...

The wife and I saw The Holdovers on Amazon Prime. I thought it was great. Paul "Pig Virus" Giamatti is a teacher at a prestigious New England boarding school in 1970 who gets stuck taking care of the kids who can't go home for the holidays. It's kinda like Breakfast Club but 15 years earlier and with more drama. I recommend it.

In the movie, "Miller, it's the champagne of beers" is said a few times. That's what reminded me to post here.

One of the movies that looked interesting from previews was "Borderlands". It had a good cast and the preview seemed to indicate it had good action and good comedy. I know nothing about the video game. My son knows of it but has never played. After we bought our tickets (free due to the cineclub I subscribe too) my son read the reviews of the movie from other movie goers. He said some were saying it was the worst movie ever made. I told him they probably weren't alive for Ishtar and Xanadu. So we went into the movie with low expectations. We were not disappointed. There was plenty of action. Not particularly memorable or good. There were some funny moments -- most captured on the previews -- but not enough to sustain the movie. My son said the iMDB score of the movie was 4.3/10. I say that it about right. It is not horrible but it is certainly not great or memorable. I felt better about the fact that I spent $0 to see it.

ETA: My son said it was way better than "Trap".

Cate Blanchett is one of the most esteemed actresses of the last 25 years. It almost seems out of character for her to have chosen that movie to star in. It’s got a 10% critics rotten tomatoes score, and 53% from the audience.

It wasn't bad acting. It is hard to say exactly what was wrong. None of the stars seemed to feed off each other like happens when you have a really good movie. I assume it is writing and direction which is all one guy.

A week ago, she and Gina Gershon were the guests on "Watch What Happens Live", the show Andy Cohen hosts on Bravo following the airing of a "Real Housewives" episode (of which Mrs. Scotch is a fan). I thought it was odd that these two high-level actresses would do the show, but I realized they were promoting a movie.

Usually the guests talk about the various Bravo shows, but this time it was more focused on their careers. Andy plays a bunch of games with the guests, and one was "Have you ever met", where we find out that Gina Gershon was in the "Hello Again" Cars video with Andy Warhol (which seems to have been scrubbed from the internet). But when asked if she ever met a "real housewife", Cate Blanchett said "what's that?" (Gina Gershon is friends with a few of them).

"Monk" was one of my favorite series. Just saw the new movie "Mr. Monk's Last Case" on Peacock. Really good. Has anyone else seen it?

Wow, it got great reviews, I’ll watch it probably this weekend. Think I’ll get lost in the storyline if I never watched the series?

The original Monk series ran from 2002 to 2009. Adrian Monk, played by Tony Shalhoub, had OCD, phobias and anxiety disorders. In Mr. Monk's Last Case, he still has those problems – but he's also dealing with depression and thoughts of suicide. Was that really necessary? I say no. The movie was pretty dark. I wonder if this was really Monk's "last case." I suspect there someday might be another Monk movie.

Shalhoub talked about Monk on Tom Scharpling's The Best Show podcast on July 24. 2024. Scharpling wrote 112 episodes of Monk and served as executive producer during the series' final four seasons.

WTF is going on with the college football? Nearly every Saturday of my existence, the games end at 6 pm, and then local news and programming comes on. But today, it's now 11 pm and the games are still on. They didn't end at 6, or 7, or 8, or even 11. I don't recall ever seeing this before.

There seem to be more games. There are far more teams/cities/colleges than I remember there being.

They always had prime time games on the ESPN networks, but yes the big networks in the last few years have been featuring more and more prime time games.

That's why I never got into NCAA. There seem to be a million D1 teams. I cant keep track of all of them. Also Philly isn't a NCAAF town so I never had any hype to get behind. Temple always sucks and Penn State is too far away for Philly people to really care about.

And there are so many players...like thousands...and under 300 get drafted each year. The all time best NCAA teams get like 6 players drafted in one class. So it amateur hour.

Also they're a bunch of children. Yes I know they're over 18 but I mean come on...at least NFL players are the age when you really are a man.
