BEST I RECOGNIZE
20 18 John Mellencamp - Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First)

WORST I RECOGNIZE
03 05 Toni Braxton - Un-Break My Heart

26 24 Bryan Adams - Let’s Make a Night to Remember

I don't recognize this by name but I'm willing to bet it's boring as fuck. After Waking Up the Neighbours (which itself is a mix of good rock with mediocre power ballads), his music turned to shit with shmaltz like "All For Love", "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman" and the unbearable "Please Forgive Me". Hell, he even teamed up with Barbra Streisand for some song like "I Found Someone" or something like that. How the mighty had fallen...

4 for this countdown.

29 23 Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know
25 21 Dishwalla - Counting Blue Cars (thanks IRBS)
16 15 Eric Clapton - Change the World
11 12 Sheryl Crow - If It Makes You Happy

I would've thought the Alanis song would be your "best", but anyway, this is a pathetic list of songs for this awesome year in rock. Here are the 1996 bands I have in my favorites list in Scotch Sampler:

Eels
Nada Surf
K's Choice
Cat Power
Alice in Chains
Soundgarden
Beck
Sheryl Crow (covered here)
Dave Matthews Band
Tori Amos
Tracy Bonham
Salt
Sublime
Fiona Apple
Sneaker Pimps
Patty Griffin
Cake
Pearl Jam
Bell & Sebastion

I have "You Oughta" as an ok, mostly because of Flea and the line "go down on you in a theater". I I remember the first time I heard it, I had a reaction I often have and said it out loud to my friend who was there: "I can see how other people could like this one."

But it's her best song by far. Everything she put out after that to me was bad (I can enjoy "Ironic", but the concept is stupid).

I like most of the album, but anyway, I have it under 1995 in Scotch Sampler. I guess it spilled-over into '96.

Is it ironic that nothing in her song is ironic?

And what do you have against someone going down on you in a theatre? Aside from losing focus on the plot of the movie, there is no downside.

Yes that's Daryl Hall singing backups at the end

29 (28) Information Society - Think
Talk about a forgotten hit! It was on the radio every day for weeks. Don't think it's been aired since!

25 (01) Janet Jackson - Black Cat
The cassingle has two non-LP versions. Side A has guitar from Nuno Bettencourt (of Extreme). Side B has guitar from Vernon Reid (of Living Colour). Original guitar was by some dude named Dave Barry.

19 (05) D.N.A. f/ Suzanne Vega - Tom’s Diner
Fascinating story

14 (14) Soho - Hippychick
Heavily uses a sample of Smiths "How Soon Is Now"

07 (02) Bette Midler - From a Distance
My room mate at the time got laid off and signed up for food stamps. We used to sing our own version of this song as "Food Assistance".
