NPR reports that SAG-AFTRA members "have until December 5th to vote 'yea' or 'nay' on a new contract." When Congressional members, union members and others vote, why is it always "yea" or "nay"? Why can't they be like normal people and say "yes" or "no"?
It's a holdover from ye olden days, when certain Americans were only counted as 2/3 of a person.

And may I point out that "ye" – in modern-day names such as Ye Olde Coffee Shoppe – is not pronounced with a "y" sound? The word is an older variant of "the" and should be pronounced the same.

He might disagree

There are now three "Ye" words. One is the former spelling of "the." One is the archaic form of "you." One is a shortened form of Kanye West's first name – and "Kanye" is a shortened form of the Yoruba word "adekanye," which means "next in line to the chieftancy."

We also have this idiotic "ye" chant in this idiotic song:

Today's Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle by Tom Locke includes the clue "Laundry cycle for a tough stain." I was certain the answer would be SOAK – but it had to be seven letters. The answer turned out to be PRESOAK. I should write Locke and inform him that "soak" is a perfectly good word and does not need "pre" adeed to it.

"Predeceased" refers to a person dying before someone else, usually a spouse. There is nothing wrong with the word – unless some dumb schmuck changes it to "pre-predeceased." Jean Reynolds holds a Ph.D. in English and has written 12 books. On her Write With Jean website, she complained about unnecessary "pre" words:

"Jean Reynolds holds a Ph.D. in English and has written 12 books. On her Write With Jean website, she complained about unnecessary "pre" words:

She's mostly correct, but I don't think "pre-existing condition" is an example of an unnecessary prefix. It refers to having a condition prior to beginning new coverage. Saying you have an existing condition doesn't make it clear in the same way.

By the way, all this talk about pre- makes me think of one of the most annoying workplace terms: proactive. Managers always want you to be proactive, but what does it really mean? Is it like preemptive? Is it the opposite of passive? Or reactive? Doesn't it simply mean that you should just do something, instead of not doing something?

The only time I use proactive is in contrast to reactive. Like when a danger has existed for years but they don't fix it until someone gets hurt.

"Why be proactive when you can be reactive after someone has a broken leg?"

Today I got an email from a travel agency: "Book your vacay now." Merrian-Webster gives this definition:

"va·cay, n, pl vacays (1991), US, informal: vacation"

I give this ananlysis of the word: It's stupid and annoying.

This isn't really an annoying phrase, but I have a co-worker that every time she speaks her voice makes me want to hit her over the head with a hammer until she is dead. We do a teleconference every morning and I'm usually good about hitting the meat button before I scream to myself about how much I hate her. But I forgot one day and I got to saying effing and then almost her name before I remembered and stop myself got away with one there
