Apple's CarPlay (formerly iOS in the Car) will hit the road in 2014.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) unveiled a rebranded in-vehicle device integration system at the Geneva Motor Show on Monday. After first introducing it at last year’s Worldwide Developers Conference as “iOS in the Car,†Apple has renamed the system “CarPlay.†The embedded automotive operating system allows users to more easily access all the functions found on their iPhone while driving.

As explained by Apple in a press release, the Siri-powered system allows users to make calls, listen to messages, and dictate responses — all without using their hands. Users also have the option to enhance any Apple Maps shown on the dashboard display by having Siri provide spoken turn-by-turn directions. Unsurprisingly, CarPlay will also give users access to Apple’s iTunes Radio, as well as any other music, audiobooks, or podcasts. According to Apple’s CarPlay page, the system will also support third-party apps like Beats Radio, Spotify, Stitcher, and iHeartRadio.

This will affect my car buying decision in the not too distant future. Since Honda and Hundayi is one of the models listed I'll take a closer look at them. It also would be nice if Slacker Radio was one of the compatible radio apps, but I believe that's coming.

Pioneer says CarPlay firmware update for existing 2014 in-dash systems coming this summer | 9to5Mac

Following reports yesterday that car electronics manufacturer Alpine was planning to launch aftermarket CarPlay units in the fall, Pioneer issued a press release today confirming a firmware update for existing in-dash systems. Pioneer will be bringing Apple’s new CarPlay system to existing vehicles using the company’s five 2014 NEX in-dash multimedia receivers this summer through a firmware update.

Utilizing large, in-dash Pioneer LCD displays, CarPlay featuring Siri® voice control, gives iPhone users the features while allowing them to stay focused on the road. With CarPlay, consumers with iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5 can use Siri to make and receive calls, compose and respond to text messages, use Apple Maps for navigation and listen to their music, podcasts and iTunes RadioSM. Car electronics manufacturer Alpine will begin selling a standalone aftermarket console that will support Apple's CarPlay vehicle integration feature, reports Japanese business newspaper Nikkei. Alpine's offering, which will likely be the first aftermarket device to support CarPlay, is said to hit the United States and Europe this year with a cost of around $500 to $700.

While CarPlay will be found in a number of announced and upcoming vehicles from manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, BMW, Ford, GM, and Honda, the integration of the system into older vehicles has been a topic of much discussion in recent months. Pioneer Electronics expressed interest in implementing CarPlay compatibility with its existing and future products, only to back away from its comments soon after. Other companies, such as Kenwood, have indicated to MacRumors that CarPlay is only being looked at for integration and that adoption is not currently imminent.

Hyundai announces CarPlay available this summer in its 2015 Sonata

Hyundai announced today its 2015 Sonata will be the first of its vehicles to feature Apple’s new CarPlay technology. Apple rebranded its iOS in the Car feature announced at WWDC in 2013 as CarPlay earlier this year with a number of committed partners including Hyundai, and today’s announcement by the automative manufacturer is the first unveiling of its official plans to bring CarPlay to market with its brand.

Apple Confirms 'MLB at Bat' Support on CarPlay Website

Apple today updated the CarPlay section of its website, adding MLB At Bat to the official list of apps supported by the service. While support for MLB At Bat was demoed during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, its inclusion has gone largely under the radar.

As described by PCMag, the MLB At Bat app allows users to listen to a variety of radio stations that broadcast local games, streaming live games from the iPhone through the car's speakers. Access to MLB At Bat on CarPlay will require a subscription, which is priced at $19.99 for the 2014 season or $2.99 per month.

First announced in March, CarPlay connects the iPhone to a car's built-in display, giving drivers a hands-free way to access Maps, make phone calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music while staying focused on the road. CarPlay works with Siri and integrates with the car's built-in controls and in-dash touchscreen.

I'm not saying it will happen overnight, but it seems like this could have the potential to do everything satrad does and much more.

It'll absolutely be a great option for people, and it will provide enough content that some people won't need other services like SXM, but it won't kill em. Competition is awesome, and hopefully it makes them both work harder to get us all better programming.

I think this is a great product for all of the people that weren't likely to get SXM, or used to have it, but are already in the Apple ecosystem. It seems like a great untapped section of the market. It will bring content to people in a way that they weren't used to getting, and that's exciting. There's plenty of room for both out there.

They're certainly going to have some sleepless nights at Sirius HQ. they've got sports with MLB now, and ESPN Radio is on iTunes Radio. If the NFL ever decides to step into the 21st century, they'd be a big draw for whatever app they have.

I will probably be in the market for a car after the first of the year, Hyundai and Honda are at the top of the list if this hits by then. Wonder if they'll announce more supported apps when iOS8/iPhone 6 rolls around. TuneIn Pro and NPR/PRI would be big ones.
