Classic country countdown coming. Yes, I like alliteration. Tomorrow, May 15, SiriusXM Spotlight channel 4 will begin a countdown of the top 1,000 country songs of all time. I wonder if the countdown will include Gene Autry, Jimmie Rodgers, Emmett Miller, Eck Robertson, Riley Puckett, Vernon Dalhart, Fiddlin' John Carson, Pappy O'Daniel, the Carter Family, Charlie Poole & the North Carolina Ramblers, Gid Tanner & His Skillet Lickers and other artists of the 1920s and '30s. Probably not.

Weekly Schedule - SiriusXM Spotlight

Three country songs each spent 21 weeks at number one: Eddy Arnold's I'll Hold You In My Heart (1947), Hank Snow's I'm Moving On (1950) and Webb Pierce's In The Jailhose Now (1955) – so which of those was the number-one song on SiriusXM's just-concluded Top 1000 Country Countdown? None of them. Number one was Garth Brooks' Friends In Low Places, which topped the chart for four weeks in 1990. No fair! Number two was Patsy Cline's Crazy and #3 was Dolly Parton's 1982 remake of her 1974 hit I Will Always Love You. No fair!

Did their criteria include something besides just chart success?
I don't like Country, but I actually recognize those top 3

That one ranked fifth, behind Eric Church's Springsteen (!) and ahead of The Devil Went Down To Georgia. KLAC in Los Angeles had a country format from 1970 to 1993. Twice they assembled a Top 500 compiled from listener-submitted lists of their ten favorite songs. The first countdown was in 1975 and Hank Williams' Your Cheatin' Heart was number one. When they did a second countdown a decade later, number one was He Stopped Loving Her Today.

I don't know how SiriusXM's Top 1000 was determined. Sales? Requests? Chart positions? Monkeys sitting at typewriters? Your Cheatin' Heart was #20.

Of course the original 1990 single had only two verses. In 1991, Brooks began singing the longer version in concerts and finally recorded it for a live album during a November 1997 show at Kansas Coliseum in Wichita. His wife Sandy was one of the background singers.

Leo Moracchioli is a 40-year-old multi-instrumentalist who owns Frog Leap Studios in Oltedal, Norway. He records heavy-metal versions of hit songs from all genres of music. Here is his Friends In Low Places. Listen at your own risk.

I figured the music of the 1920s and '30s would be ignored. I was not expecting that most of the 1940s-50s music would be ignored as well. Eleven Hank Williams songs were on the list but there was nothing by Gene Autry, Bob Wills, Red Foley or Bill Monroe and only two songs by Ernest Tubb and only one song by Kitty Wells. Eddy Arnold had 146 country hits. Ninety-two of those made the top ten and 28 went to number one. I'll Hold You In My Heart was number one for 21 weeks in 1947. A year later, Bouquet Of Roses spent 19 weeks at number one. Don't Rob Another Man's Castle topped the chart for 12 weeks in 1949. There's Been A Change In Me and I Wanna Play House With You each spent 11 weeks at number one in 1951. Only one – one! – Eddy Arnold song made the list. Make The World Go Away, which was number one for three weeks in December 1965, was #154. Here is the top 30:

1. Friends In Low Places - Garth Brooks
2. Crazy - Patsy Cline
3. Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
4. I Will Always Love You - Dolly Parton
5. Springsteen - Eric Church
6. He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones
7. The Devil Went Down To Georgia - Charlie Daniels Band
8. King Of The Road - Roger Miller
9. Dirt Road Anthem - Jason Aldean
10. El Paso - Marty Robbins
11. I Fall To Pieces - Patsy Cline
12. The Dance - Garth Brooks
13. On The Road Again - Willie Nelson
14. Mountain Music - Alabama
15. How Forever Feels - Kenny Chesney
16. Stand By Your Man - Tammy Wynette
17. Livin' On Love - Alan Jackson
18. Ring Of Fire - Johnny Cash
19. Live Like You Were Dying - Tim McGraw
20. Your Cheatin' Heart - Hank Williams
21. When You Say Nothing At All - Keith Whitley
22. Drink In My Hand - Eric Church
23. Luckenbach Texas - Waylon Jennings/Willie Nelson
24. Play It Again - Luke Bryan
25. God Bless The USA - Lee Greenwood
26. Hello Darlin' - Conway Twitty
28. Lookin' For Love - Johnny Lee
29. Coal Miner's Daughter - Loretta Lynn
30. It’s A Great Day To Be Alive - Travis Tritt

The replay of countdown started Monday morning at 2am and ended about an hour ago.

I guess it takes about two and a half days to play all 1000.

They're in the 900s right now

Buck Owens had 21 number-one country hits. Only four were on the Top 1000. Together Again was #946 – but it was by Ray Charles, not Buck Owens. Crying Time was #737 – but it was by Ray Charles, not Buck Owens. And Ray Charles' Busted was #495. Seven Spanish Angels, Charles' duet with Willie Nelson, was also on the list.

Only one Eddy Arnold song and only one Kitty Wells song but four songs by Ray Charles. That just ain't right!

Buck Owens Cryin' Time and Ray Charles cover Crying Time are both in the Top 1000.

Here's both of them doing a duet ...

The Top 1000 is completely arbitrary. It's only here for people to listen to thru the Memorial Day holiday. It'll be gone in a week.
