We've talked abt commercials a lot over the years but a quick search reveals we don't have a dedicated thread...or at least not one I could find after searching for 45 seconds. Now we have one.

I thought of this thread for a reason. Recently I discovered the YouTube channel Good Mythical Morning. It's a fun channel and I've been pounding old episodes. They sometimes start with an ad read, that's normal for YouTube.

However the YouTube algorithm knows this and for the first time a few days ago I clicked on a totally unrelated video (abt this British guy who has a pet seagull, gotta post that in the animal thread) and b4 the seagull vid started, instead of a normal ad for like Lexus or whatever, they cut the live read from a Good Mythical Morning ep and played that. I've never seen that b4 and thought it was an innovative way to get me to buy shit cause it knows I'm a fan of the GMM guys. I'm not really bothered by that.

Well now that you brought it up, I have to start with the favorite commercial of Mrs. Scotch and I. It's from 1997 (the year we got married), and I recently discovered that it's actually on YouTube. It's just a stupid car commercial, but it's an early ad for the Subaru Outback. In keeping with the name, Paul Hogan himself is doing the shilling; and the ad is modeled after the popular Mad Max movies.

The part that always gets us is when one of the assassins changes his tone from "Arrrggghhh!!" to "Hey, is that leather?"

Without googling it...that's crocodile dundee right? Never saw those movies but his character is in the zeitgeist.

Fury road is one of the best movies of this century btw.

Here's another great 2. One classic and one modern. Both great. I love Larry so much.

Anyway I was thinking this thread would be more about how the advertisement business is evolving with new tactics....but posting cool ads is just as cool.

I'm not an Macintosh guy (android all day bitches!) but there's no denying this 1984 homage is amazingly good marketing.
Like Mad Men shit.

Also bouncing hot lady boobs is never a bad marketing idea. We just have to pretend and call it something different these days...Like empowering strong women.

Both great. And I totally agree with Larry about letting stupid people vote.

Hahaj yea so let's go back to colonial days where only land owning men should vote right? That makes a ton of sense.

Really tho I hate how we have this push every election to vote or ur an asshole. Living in a free land means u can vote or not vote if u want. That's what it means to be free. And I've voted everytime since I was 18 (voted for Nader over Bush) I'm way more cynical now. And I still vote every time. It's fun. But I don't think too much less of u (well I kinda do, read the news once and a while) if u don't vote. if u don't vote. It's ur right.

But like it's kinda cool to at least be slightly educated on the way the greatest nation in history is headed and show ur voice on that by voting.

Cool. But that's when Apple lost me. Nothing from our Apple 2C was gonna work on the new Mac and I said "EFF EWE!!" and have been a PC guy since.

Yep. Girl power has become "Wet Ass Pussy". Sad.

"Female empowerment" in 2022:

Ask for a car while you ride that dick
You really ain't never gotta fuck him for a thang
He already made his mind up 'fore he came
Now get your boots and your coat for this wet-ass pussy
He bought a phone just for pictures of this wet-ass pussy
Paid my tuition just to kiss me on this wet-ass pussy

Aug 9, 2020 — “WAP” is the epitome of female empowerment. Both Cardi and Megan are powerhouses of female sexuality, independence, and dominance.

Living in a free land means u can vote or not vote if u want.

Amen!

I totally agree with Larry about letting stupid people vote.

I forget if I already shared this on here. Back in 2004 (the election after 9/11) I got two blank stares from stupid people who vote.

The other guitarist in my band said he voted for GWB. I asked why. He said "You don't change generals in the middle of a war." I said, "You do if they're losing that war." Blank stare....

The bassist said he voted for GWB. I asked why. He said he works for a company that sells ATVs and Bush was doing good things for trails (or something like that). I asked if that was the only reason. He said 'basically'. I said "Is this your career? Do you plan on working for this company the rest of your life?" Blank stare...

Kinda like DRC, our bass player has implemented a no politics policy at practice. Half of us are on one side of things, and the other half are on the wrong side.
For most issues, all of us are generally rational about topics, but others…..oy…..

Tom Morello says that he gets along with Ted Nugent just fine, but they avoid politics.

All I'm going to say about this (it's non-partisan and related to commercials) is that the laws (or lack of) regarding political parties, specifically advertising, are just wrong. Starting around June, I was being bombarded with political TV ads for the November elections. But once we hit September, it's now 100% of the network commercials for every commercial break. And it's the same dozen or so ads. Each one is 15 to 30 seconds long, and in a 3 minute commercial break, you see about 10 of them. And this repeats every 10 minutes. By law, the ads are allowed to say absolutely anything they want - there's no consequence for false statements. By November, I'll have seen each ad over a thousand times.

It causes me to have the following thoughts:
- I will never, ever contribute to anyone's political campaign; because it will just fund more of these ads.
- It's both disgusting and wrong that this is what politicians and the parties spend their money on, and it's sad that we put up with it. So many problems - from homelessness to poverty to infrastructure - could be improved if all the money wasted on annoying people was directed towards fixing problems in our communities.
- All those thousands of hours of non-stop ads is 99% ineffective. No one is changing their minds, or reconsidering their support, based on any of this. All it is is "well they're doing it, so we have to do it too".
- What happened to limits? We have rules and regulations on everything but this. Does anyone realize what this is doing to people's mental health, or their impressions about politics, political parties, and the candidates?
- Is it any wonder that a large percent of the population gets so turned-off and fed-up by this barrage of lies, they decide not to vote? In many people's minds, voting is considered to be an endorsement of all the bullshit that the candidates/parties put us through. And that goes for the stupid lawn signs too.
