As promised, I have 273 songs that have been posted in the "I Can't Believe It Wasn't A Top 40" thread - each of them HAVE appeared on the Hot 100 or Bubbling Under. That's 256 for the madness, the 'sweet 16' who don't have to compete until those 256 are down to 16, plus oh well there's one extra song so round 1 will have a 3-song bracket.

Like the 'great 8' in the two-hit wonder madness, the 'sweet 16' will be nominated by us to avoid the eventual top 8 all going against each other in round 1 while Fart Wank edges out Ass Ponys in their own bracket. Ok, I stole those names from the "Best & worst bands" thread, but you get the idea.

Nominate 10 songs that automatically make it to round 6 (of 9). The 16 with the most nominations will be immune from elmination until round 6, and won't even compete against each other until round 7.

Oh, I'm tired of you guys and your fershlugginer song lists! Anyway, here are my picks:

Beatles: All My Loving
Beatles: From Me To You
Beatles: I Am The Walrus
Beatles: I Should Have Known Better
Doors: Break On Through
Natalie Imbruglia: Torn
Police: Message In A Bottle
Rolling Stones: Street Fighting Man
Traveling Wilburys: End Of The Line
The Who: My Generation

In April 1967, Break On Through managed a single week on the Bubbling Under chart at #126. Here in Los Angeles, it reached #21 on the KHJ Boss 30 and #30 on the KFWB Fabulous Forty.

OK, I'm going through them now, and I just have so many questions:

Where did these songs come from?
Some of these songs seem like they were never on any sort of list I ever saw, or discussed here (an observation, not a question).
Why do some artists have 1 or 2 not so popular songs on the list, but others (like Pearl Jam) have like a dozen?
Is this exercise now for us to pick our favorite (or most deserving) 10 songs from the list?

Ok, now I'm even more confused. There are a lot of good songs here, but none of them are on Sadchild's list. I don't understand.

Just for you, Mister scotch, here is another one-hit wonder. This was Ann-Margret's only top-40 hit. It reached #17 in September 1961 – and it, too, is not on the list.

"Only You" already qualifies as one of your choices.

These four have never been posted to the "I Can't Believe It's Not A Top 40" thread, but can qualify because they've been on the Hot 100:

Ice Cube "Wicked"
New Order ""Blue Monday 1988" (not the original)
Wu-Tang Clan "CREAM"
Yaz "Situation"

I'll add them to the "can't believe" thread, and add them into the madness. It will expand the total number of songs to 277 (minus the sweet 16 makes 261, which means FIVE brackets will have three songs in them in round one, instead of ONE bracket with three songs in it).
EVERYONE ELSE CAN NOMINATE ANY OF THOSE FOUR TOO IF THEY WANT FOR THE SWEET 16, JUST DON'T EXCEED TEN TOTAL NOMINATIONS.

The songs below don't qualify for this madness, based on the rule stated above:
"each of them HAVE appeared on the Hot 100 or Bubbling Under"

L7 - Pretend We're Dead
Marilyn Manson - The Beautiful People
Romeo Void - Never Say Never
Sisters of Mercy - This Corrosion
Tool - Sober

(same answer as above)

It's based only on what everyone has actually posted to the "I Can't Believe It's Not A Top 40" thread (with the exception of adding 4 more in orange just now)

Is this exercise now for us to pick our favorite (or most deserving) 10 songs from the list?
Yes. Most deserving. Songs you "can't believe" never made the top 40. For example, I don't love "It's Raining Men" but I was shocked to learn it wasn't a top 40. Not sure yet if I will nominate it though because there are at least a dozen I was totally shocked by.

Yes, I confused a "one-hit wonder" with an "I-can't-believe-it's-not-a-top-40" artist. But since I mentioned Ann-Margret, I may as well note that her latest album, Born To Be Wild, reached #93 on Billboard's album sales chart in May 2023. This is her first chart album since December 1964 when her duet album with John Gary, David Merrick Presents Hits From His Broadway Hits, got to #141. Her new album includes guest artists Pat Boone, Cliff Richard, Mickey Gilley, Pete Townshend, Rick Wakeman, T.G. Sheppard, the Oak Ridge Boys and others. Here is her version of Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock featuring Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry and Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty. Ann-Margret was 81 when she recorded this. She sounds more like 21 – and looks like she's 31.

I didn’t read a word you wrote, but thanks for the Ann Margret pix.

I’m going to have to make my picks for sweet 16 advancement this weekend. There’s a lot to sort through.
