Farewell HD Radio...

I had HD Radio in my old car, & liked it OK at the beginning. There was a pretty good old school R&B station, & a couple other decent subchannels. But pretty quickly, stations just started using the subchannels for simulcasting their AM stations & their lower-power FM stations. Kinda defeated the purpose at that point.

Even if it's not free, I find my XM Radio offers way more.

Hey, here's an idea. Let's take a technology that's fading in content, such as FM radio; but instead of the already limited broadcast radius of FM, we'll make it a fraction of the size, so that hardly anyone can get it. And we'll call it HD radio, which doesn't stand for "high-definition" radio, as one would think, but for, um, well nobody really knows what HD radio stands for. Yeah, that's the ticket.

I think I quit listening to FM altogether except for NPR. Apple Music, TuneIn, maybe back to Sirius when their app improves and their developers learn how to program for HomePod.

Well, in typical Canadian fashion, HD Radio has now arrived in Canada as of this past Friday. The station I listen to is now HD. My car is able to pick it up so I guess it is HD enabled. It sounds a bit better and there is no more lag between the digital display of song names as there was before.

Seems like you have a few interesting options. Stations - Canada - HD Radio
Mine isn't even listed there yet. I see a 1 by it. No idea how to access the 2 or 3 if there is a 2 or 3.

ETA: I found out how. If I touch the HD symbol it gives me a list of subchannels. The radio station I listen to only has the 1.

1's are always the main station ( as you'd expect ), with the difference being now it's in HD. The additional stations are the 2's & 3's. The only thing I really miss in mine is that one of the local country station's subchannels simulcasts a local sports talk station. If I'm stuck in the car, I have to listen on AM & it sounds Gawdawful. I miss that HD simulcast.

And they force stations to play a certain percentage of "our own culture's" music. Which I always found interesting.
Not culture. Just country. They must play 1/3 Canadian content. MAPL = Music Artist Production Lyrics. 3/4 of those = Canadian song. For us we are used to the music and it is recognizable. May be different to a visitor who has not heard the songs (look how many "surprises" on the AT40s that did not make top 40 which are Canadian).

When I worked at Broadcast Data Systems ( 1999-2005 ) one of the stations I monitored was CHTZ out of Toronto. And due to the Canadian Content rules, holy smokes did I learn a LOTTA Canadian music.
