It's a different situation back then than it is today. Back then it was who was more trustworthy to report the news as it is (Walter Cronkite), now it's whose more Sensationalistic and opinionated (Rachel Maddow, Tucker Carlson, etc.) And even back then you had 3 channels reporting the news, and didn't have the 24 hour news cycle you do now. When CNN came around, that started to change, and then when you had two more networks come on the scene that were decidedly slanted to either side (MSNBC and FoxNews) that got kicked into overdrive. With these news operations it seems to be more about making the news than reporting it.That's a great point and when your corporate like that all you really care about is the bottom line. So whatever opinion will make you money, that's the opinion you go with.
But wasn't ABC NBC and CBS corporate like back in the '50s. How was corporate back then? Different than corporate today? Because like I said, maybe I'm being nostalgic, but back then those corporations seem to actually care about reporting straight facts or at least as best as they could.
Until sometime in the 80s, it was against FCC rule to have a bias or present a biased view without providing equal time to opposing view. It as removed and that birthed cable news (FOX, CNN, MSNBC) and ended any TV news from being corporate influence free. That's a great point and when your corporate like that all you really care about is the bottom line. It's weird I'm asking the Canadian this but don't we still have the same rule for presidential contests? Like each candidate has to have the same amount of air time? At least I think I remember that from, maybe it was the 90s?Until sometime in the 80s, it was against FCC rule to have a bias or present a biased view without providing equal time to opposing view. I know there was always a rebuttle to the State Of The Union or whatever address he makes. And I think the same when he sits at his desk and makes an announcement and pre-empts or delays everybody's favourite tv show. It's weird I'm asking the Canadian this but don't we still have the same rule for presidential contests? Give them time.I suppose we should be thankful the news media isn't calling this supposed scandal "Nosegate."
