Let's talk about history stuff.

We all know the only important history started on July 4th 1776. Everything before that was wrong.

That's cool, I love old shit. I just saw the mosaic floor on the local news. I hope they clear the whole area.

That's killer. It's amazing that they could do work that detailed so long ago with the kind of tools they had back then.
That's some craftsmanship. It's remarkable that it's in such great condition.

I've been on a history kick lately, reading about ancient civilizations, the Age of Discovery, and American westward expansion.

Reading about the spice trade, you think about the wars, the countless lives that were lost, all the effort that was put in by merchants and sailors to acquire spices.

Now we just drop a buck or two for spices we find on Aisle 7. We're spoiled.

This videos from the early 1900's in this article are pretty great.

How does the colorizing work? Is it original, or done by computer now?

I have no idea. As a kid we had a picture of my dad's parents as young people and it was in color. I'm pretty sure that was painted by hand. I guess it's computerized now.

They use computers. They start by picking a few items that they know are supposed to be certain colors, like grass, blue skies, flower, or whatever. Then they can interpolate what colors everything else should be based on it's grey-scale relationship to known colors in each scene.

That is how they did it from the moon. There was a reason they put the US flag in view of the camera. They knew what red and blue colours were and fixed the rest based on that. Pretty sophisticated for the time.

My kid and I like to joke that life must have sucked way back in the day before anything was in color.

I think it was Jon Stewart who joked that footage from North Korea always looks like black and white, because it's so depressing there, those are the real colors.

When they filmed Band of Brothers, they desaturated the colors and gave them the darker, muted tones to make the mood of the show fit the action that was happening.
