NOBODY EXPECTS THE S..........ONG TO MAKE SUCH AN ABRUPT CHANGE. BUT IT DOES!

A thread for songs that are going along as one expects and then suddenly change drastically.

[Please note the time at which the song derails]

I'll kick it off with Van Halen "I'm The One". Abrupt change at 2:48

The one that immediately comes to mind is "Paradise by the Dashboard Light". It has at least 2 derailments in it. Beats me the times but I think it clear where they are.

As I've discussed before, people of my age (including IRBS) would go to grade school dances that ended with one of these two songs. They start out as ballads, so you'd hopefully ask some girl to slow dance, only to be awkwardly embarrassed when the fast part comes. The options become
1) Slow dance faster, or
2) Go into a fast dance, and hope she does as well, without looking silly.

Back in the day, friends of mine used this for their wedding song (it was not a fancy event). But shortly after the transition to hard rock guitar solo, it got yanked.

I heard a Paul McCartney interview, where he explained the apparent "genius" of the complexly transitioning songs he wrote. He said something like "I have these little ideas, like a single melody line, that goes nowhere. So I put a few of them together and it makes a song".
