With 2022 behind us, some artists are ready to join the high five club!

A Day To Remember

EW2uUKeXQAEcxF1.jpg

Genre: metalcore meets pop punk (but in a very bipolar kind of way)

Discovered: Looking for new music while writing a weekly music column for 411mania.com

Other: One moment they're heavy as hell, the next moment it's danceable rock to clap along to. They're all over the place in pretty much every song. Oh, and these guys sued their record label and won, walking away with $4 million!

HIGH FIVE:
1. The Downfall Of Us All
2. Last Chance To Dance
3. Right Back At It Again
4. Mindreader
5. Paranoia

Now here's a conundrum. If one of THESE guys died, would they be allowed in the CDT?

1. Too Late For Goodbyes
2. Say You're Wrong
3. Valotte
4. Stick Around
5. Lucky Ones

Monster Truck

mus_monstertruck_2512.jpg

Genre: heavy southern rock

Discovered: don't remember but it was the #1 song below in 2013.

Other: Like Skynyrd on steroids. My band's new guitarist likes this band, and a bunch of other bands with this sound. Heavy rock with a groove (and side of grits).

1. Sweet Mountain River
2. Golden Woman
3. Don't Tell Me How To Live
4. Old Train
5. For The People

Genre: heavy rock

Discovered: probably FM

Other: #1, #3 and #5 are from their major label debut (2001). The others are from 2013 and 2021. There's a lot of stuff from them I don't care about from 2002-2022.

1. Click Click Boom
2. Crows
3. Superstar
4. In It To Win It
5. Your Disease

Spiritbox

spiritbox-interview-399-web.jpg

Genre: post-metal (intense, but experimental with elements of ambient/prog/etc)

Discovered: don't remember how but it was summer 2021.

Other: The #1 below is the least heavy, and has no metal-growl-scream vox (most radio friendly). Also, never a good idea for a husband and wife to be in the same band:

When Courtney LaPlante and husband Michael Stringer were finally given the time and space to form the band of their dreams, they had more disagreements than their years of marriage combined. What should the artwork look like? Fire or flowers? Black or blue? Working through those nitty-gritties felt much like marriage therapy, or even parenting for the first time. "We disagreed on so much," LaPlante reflects, "I'm talking, like, the color of the corner of a piece of artwork. All of the little things." While fundamentally aligned on all the big-picture stuff, LaPlante and Stringer weren't prepared for all the hours spent bickering over color palettes on Photoshop that were in store for them.

1. The Summit
2. Secret Garden
3. Sew Me Up
4. Hurt You
5. Rule Of Nines

Warning

616501E4-the-warning-showcase-disciple-video-image.jpg

Genre: heavy rock, radio metal

Discovered: Metallica Blacklist - a 4 CD set of bands covering songs from The Black Album. I was disappointed in pretty much all of it, except their cover.

Other: This is one of those "dreams do come true" cool stories. In 1994. three very young girls did a cover of "Enter Sandman". Seven years later they were asked to cover it again by Metallica for the 30th anniversary of The Black Album. The following year they opened for Foo Fighters in front of a zillion people.

1. Enter Sandman (with Alessia Cara)
2. Choke
3. Error
4. Money
5. Disciple

THAT'S IT FOR 2023!
