With my community band weekly rehearsals in full swing, plus a myriad of doctors' appointments and other errands, I've managed to get in a fair amount of listening lately to the indie scene on SiriusXMU in my car. A lot of it doesn't rise to the level of "liking" to be noteworthy, but most of it is pretty okay and interesting, with a fairly broad range of musical styles. I figured I had enough likeable new music that I could make a post about it, and I do.
I'll start with the return of that awesome duo, The Kills, fronted by the daring Alison Mosshart (who also fronts The Dead Weather). Here’s the first single from their new album, which is dropping today (I’ve always wanted to say that)
The Kills – New York
Next, some pleasantly prototypical indie grunge from an Asheville NC band named Wednesday
Wednesday – Quarry
One of the things I love about XMU is that I get introduced to music I would never think to seek out on my own, but nevertheless end up liking a lot, thereby expanding my worldview. This crazily infectious song from the British group Yard Act is the perfect example. Here’s the full-boat long-form video version:
Yard Act – The Trench Coat Museum
And here’s another plug for XMU. I never heard of Faye Webster, but others have:
So she's been around for a few years. I’m guessing the Atlanta artist’s move into a more “indie-sounding” direction is what finally got her onto the XMU rotation. The music is very simple and gentle, but she gives it this indescribable character, with poignant lyrics. It sounds a bit like Lana Del Ray. The style of both the music and videos can best be described as “acid trip fantasy” or maybe “heroin comedown” on these songs from her upcoming album release.
