"She Blinded Me With Science"

sciencegiphy.gif

Had an epiphany this morning. I think I understand better what this song is actually about.

The last line of each chorus is different:

She blinded me with science!
Failed me in biology
She blinded me with science!
Failed me in geometry
She blinded me with science!
And hit me with technology

The line “she blinded me with science” is about how the pheromones are making him horny but he’s so charged up he can’t even think (or see) straight.

“Failed me in biology” means he was fumbling about and had trouble finding exactly where to stick it (like Eddie Murphy talks about in Delirious: “You got a shoe horn, baby?”).

“Failed me in geometry” means he couldn’t get the angle right to access her g-spot.

“Hit me with technology” means she had to get out the vibrator to be satisfied.

...for "I don't understand"
Hectic thinks your rationale is suspect. However, I think you're spot-on. Dolby is a bright, witty guy, and I'm sure he planned those innuendos. After all, the guy invented the Motorola ringtone. And The Golden Age of Wireless is a brilliant album.

I emailed a fellow music nerd about my "Science" interpretation and he basically said he thinks I'm on to something, but often listeners read more into lyrics than the artists do. When I told him my interpretation of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", he said "You're prolly absolutely correct on this one."

https%3A%2F%2Fimages.genius.com%2F6a55485895667f8002488010bfbbd1ff.1000x1000x1.jpg

Like most pop and rock, I believe this song has two meanings (one clean, one dirty). The first is the obvious one about asking his lover not to leave him at home alone while she goes out dancing. The other interpretation could be he doesn’t want his lover to masturbate – instead, wake him up so they can make love. He doesn’t want to get off on his own (“not planning on going solo”), he wants to be there when his lover climaxes (“when you hit that high”).

PS - I know the title was inspired by a note Andrew wrote to George, but that's not what it's about.

often listeners read more into lyrics than the artists do.
And when pressed, artists will often come up with something interesting that the fans might be looking for, but isn't necessarily truthful. For example, Semisonic has famously said in interviews that "Closing Time" is about childbirth, and I think that's a fun and thought-provoking thing to say, but I don't buy it.

And then sometimes even the band members disagree on what a song is about

Depeche Mode "Master And Servant"

(Martin) “…I’ve explained this a million times… it’s about domination, all kinds of domination.”
(Dave) “Yeah, but on the records it’s sexual, isn’t it?”
(Alan) “No it’s not, it’s not just about sex. Martin?”
(Dave) “On the record it is, I think that’s pretty obvious from the lyric.”
(Martin) “Alright then.”

Lyrics:

There's a new game we like to play, you see
A game with added reality
You treat me like a dog, get me down on my knees
We call it master and servant

It's a lot like life, this play between the sheets
With you on top and me underneath
Forget all about equality
Let's play master and servant

Domination's the name of the game
In bed or in life, they're both just the same
Except in one you're fulfilled at the end of the day
Let's play master and servant

That's interesting. There are several artists on that list that fall under the category of "wow, I had no idea they were still a band, let alone putting out new music". For me, that would apply to:
Stabbing Westward
Midnight Oil
Smashing Pumpkins
Bush
Rick Springfield (?!)
Jimmy Eat World
Billy Idol (except he was mentioned elsewhere).

I'll admit that working from home limits my music discovery time. I have my SXM app set to SiriusXMU, which I like. But some of those artists above would probably show-up on either Alt Nation or The Spectrum, which I used to listen to more often, but not anymore.

Sometimes, when I have like an hour commute, I make a point of checking-in with those other channels, or with local radio. But that usually does me no good. I'll try The Spectrum, and it'll be an old Van Morrison song, then some crap from Dermot Kennedy, then a classic from Paul Simon, and then it's time for me to get out of the car. But maybe I'll look into some of those you listed.

Here's the ones I know about

Stabbing Westward

Broke up in 2002 after making a more pop-rock sounding album (it's good but not SW). A couple members formed The Dreaming (meh, a couple okay songs). Then another previous SW member joined The Dreaming on stage a decade or so later to play some SW songs, leading to a reunion.

Smashing Pumpkins

They broke up circa 2000. Billy Corgan formed Zwan (not very successful). Billy did some solo stuff (I never heard it, but I heard about it). Then they re-formed (without bassist Darcy) several years later.

Rick Springfield

He got out of the music and acting biz (somewhat, he slowed down considerably) to be a family guy and raise his two kids in the late 80s into the 90s. Frankly, a lot of his 2008 onward stuff is better than his older stuff. Working Class Dog (1981) remains his best album but Venus In Overdrive (2008) is a close second.

His best 2008+ stuff

Rick Springfield - Down.mp3
Rick Springfield - I Hate Myself.mp3
Rick Springfield - In The Land Of The Blind.mp3
Rick Springfield - The Voodoo House.mp3

Rick Springfield - 01 - What's Victoria's Secret.mp3
Rick Springfield - 03 - Venus In Overdrive.mp3
Rick Springfield - 12 - Saint Sahara.mp3

Holy Moley! I never posted my least favorite songs of 2022! Not sure why this just occurred to me, but here ya go:

#1 Awolnation/Taylor Hanson "Material Girl"
I despised this song when it came out. But Hanson singing makes it even worse. Mmm-barf. And Aaron, seriously WTF were you thinking?

#2 Pharrell/21 Savage/Tyler "Cash In Cash Out"
The worst of today's claptrap trap crap topped off with male vocal fry. Pharrell should go back to plagiarizing hooks.

#3 RuPaul "Smile"
A drum machine and an airhead tumbling down an endless staircase.

#4 Yuko Hara "Gudetama March"
This type of music is a mystery wrapped in an enigma inside a steaming pile of crap.

#5 Ice Spice "Munch (Feelin’ U)"
Some call this atonal mumble crap 'Brooklyn Drill' and I can see why; it makes me want to take a drill to my ears.

#6 Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul "It Hit Me"
There's an alarm going off. It's warning me this AI realized it's a bimbo and can't stop babbling.

#7 Tokischa "Delincuente"
I'm stuck in a room with an airhead who doesn't believe in punctuation.

#8 Yeule "Bites On My Neck"
Meet the next wave of singless songless snobbery.

#9 Rico Nasty "Gotsta Get Paid"
Yea yea. You're another 'that bitch' too. We get it. And you sound like you're 12.

#10 Glorilla & Hitkidd "FNF"
So you're single and hangin' with your ratchet-ass friends? I'm not even mildly surprised by this information.

#11 a-ha "I'm In"
na-uh "Go Away"

#12 Kid Rock "Never Quit"
Redneck cliches dipped in batter and served with edibles on a Confederate flag tablecloth.

#13 Smile "You Will Never Work In Television Again"
Thom Dylan. Bunga bunghole.

#14 Yung Kayo "Yeet"
In the comments: 'Perfect gym music. Gives you that push for one more rep.' 462 upvotes. Sorry but a generation pumped up by 'Yeet Trap' is a lost one.

#15 Rosalia "Hentai"
So so so so so so Sophie unplugged. I assume people watch the music video just for the camera angles.

#16 Doja Cat "Vegas"
Like Elvis needed another reason to roll over in his grave. Pass the fries.

#17 1975 "All I Need To Hear"
You ain't Robert Palmer. Stick to power pop, you pretentious plonker.

#18 Kevin Morby "This Is A Photograph"
A guy talks about photographs over a skipping hoedown record to people with 2-digit IQs.

#19 Monaleo & Flo Milli "We Not Humping (Remix)"
Two sluts talking about getting eaten out. Over an 80s synth. *puke*

#20 Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Spitting Off The Edge Of The World"
Lather rinse repeat. By lather, I mean 'be noisy, slow & annoying'. And by rinse, I mean 'be quiet, slow & boring'. It's a bad trip that ends in a coma.

I'm not sure how or why you're exposing yourself to so much shitty (to you) music, but I almost exclusively listen to music sources I like. So I wouldn't be able to make a list.

#13 Smile "You Will Never Work In Television Again"
Thom Dylan. Bunga bunghole.
I think you meant "The Smile" with Thom Yorke. Yeah, that song is out there. But I like their song The Smoke.

#18 Kevin Morby "This Is A Photograph"

I've probably heard the first one, but don't recognize by name. I kinda like the YYY's one. It's a nice change-up for them. And it features Perfume Genius on the chorus. It has a nice, "big" sound.

If I'm out and about hear an awful (or good) song, I'll pull out an app that tells me what song it is. And sometimes I'll give an artist I don't like a shot in case they come out with something good. An old example of an artist I don't like having a good song is En Vogue "Free Your Mind". A more recent one is Lil Wayne (who I despise) with "Drop The World" (it's pretty good, not great).
