Isn't Sicilian a Simon & Garfunkel song? No, wait, I'm thinking of Cecelia. I know you're all wondering what was the first number-one Italian-language song in the United States. It was Enrico Caruso's I Pagliacci – Vesti La Giubba. He first recorded the song in 1902 for the Gramophone Concert Record label in Milan. In 1904, two years after moving to the United States and joining the New York Metropolitan Orchestra, he recorded a new version for Victor Records. It became his first hit, reaching #2 in May of that year behind Blue Bell by Frank Stanley and Byron G. Harlan. Here is Causo's third recording of the song, which went to number one in October 1907:

So in 1902 Enrico Caruso had the first number-one Italian-language song in the United States. The second was Domenico Modugno's Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu, which translates to "In The Blue-Painted Blue Sky." The song, more commonly known as Volaré ("I Will Fly") was number one for five weeks in August-September 1958. Here is an obscurity: Vado Via ("I Go Away") by Drupi, born Giampero Anelli. He took his stage name after the MGM cartoon character Droopy the basset hound. Drupi has released 22 albums and more than 40 singles. This was his only U.S. hit, if you can call it that. It reached #88 on the Hot 100 in November 1973. Rosa Dorino Dato, Drupi's wife, is one of the background singers.

Famous pianist George Winston released a Doors covers album in 2002 (Stern is talking about it on 9/26/2002 - the show I'm listening to). George called "Break On Through" the greatest piece of music he'd ever heard. I continue to be in the minority here, but I still can't stand that song. And everything else they've ever done. It's like a hacksaw to my eardrums.

But I post this simply to say that yeah, I do get it, people love them. They think it's genius. I just can't understand how (and probably don't even want to understand it).
