The UCLA Bruins women's basketball team began play in 1974. In 1978, they defeated the University of Maryland Terrapins 90-74 to win the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) National Large College Basketball Championship. Top scorer was Ann Meyers, who has now spent 48 years as an analyst and color commentator, covering women's basketball, the NBA, the Olympics, NCAA softball and NCAA volleyball for ABC, CBS, NBC, TNT and ESPN. In 1986 she married former Dodgers pitcher Don Drysdale.

The NCAA began holding women's basketball tournaments in 1982. The Bruins reached the women's basketball Final Four in 2025 and 2026. Today they defeated the University of South Carolina Gamecocks 79-51 to win their first NCAA championship.
