Not boarding a plane that ultimately crashed is not "almost dying." On February 3, 1959, a date immortalized in Don McLean's American Pie as "the day the music died," Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, who had been touring the midwest, were killed in a plane crash. Waylon Jennings was a member of Buddy Holly's band. Dion & The Belmonts were also part of the tour. Waylon and Dion did not get on the plane. Therefore they did not "almost die." I rest my case,

Since they were not on the plane, I don't see how they "almost died."
You're overanalyzing King's post. He's running a game, so he necessarily wants to keep the clues short and unspecific. They almost boarded a flight, upon which they would've died. George Carlin does a bit about the term "near miss", which is used to describe 2 planes that almost collide. George says it's a "near hit"; a "near miss" would mean they crashed: "Look, they nearly missed".

Of course, the correct answer could also be the bus crash, and I've just wasted my time, but we don't know yet.

I read about Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, but I couldn't come up with a guess to fit the category. Clever.
Close enough. Congratulations, Scotchandcigar!

This week's subject was Pan Am Flight 103, which exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. All 259 people on board died, plus 11 people on the ground.

The 747 was in service since 1970 and was known as "Clipper Maid of the Seas", formerly "Clipper Morning Light". The plane was flying from Frankfurt to Detroit with stops in London and New York City.

Only one person, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was charged in the bombing. He died in 2012 from prostate cancer.

One interesting anecdote regarding the disaster was that The Four Tops were almost on that flight. The legendary Motown group was in England promoting their single "Indestructible" on the BBC TV show Top of the Pops. Due to technical issues, they couldn't tape until later in the evening. They were supposed to leave first thing in the morning, but they were too tired and ended up going home on a later British Airways flight. Thankfully, the Tops did not end up like Buddy Holly, Jim Croce and a sizable chunk of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Congratulations, Mister scotch! If you keep some of your belongings in a locker, where might that locker be?

Singers and musicians who died in plane crashes might be a good category – albeit morbid – for a DRC Madness. Among them are Aaliyah, John Denver, Jenni Rivera, Rick Nelson, Glenn Miller, Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, Grace Moore, Keith Green, R.W. Blackwood, Randy Rhoads, Jim Croce, Pedro Infante, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Otis Redding, Kyu Sakamoto, Melanie Thornton (of La Bouche), Troy Gentry (of Montgomery Gentry), Dean Paul "Dino" Martin (of Dino, Desi & Billy) ,Ronnie Van Zant and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Two members of Chuck Mangione's band died in a plane crash. Seven members of Reba McEntire's band died in a plane crash. Four members of the Bar-Kays died in the plane crash that took the life of Otis Redding. Last week, three members of the Nelons died in a plane crash.
