The name Rush had a bump in the early 90s (when Limbaugh hit the scene), but really took off when Hillary and Barack were running for prez. And it continued increasing through Trump.

For some reason, the popularity of Adolf took a nosedive in 1933.

Many people believe Harpo Marx changed his legal first name from Adolph to Arthur to avoid being associated with Adolf Hitler. That is not so. Harpo, born in 1888, was Jewish and did not like having a German-sounding name. He started calling himself Arthur in 1909 and legally changed his name in 1911. Hitler was pretty much unknown outside of Germany until 1921 when he became chairman of the Nazi party.

Yes, I found another country singer who went by his middle name. Stuart Hamblen was born Carl Stuart Hamblen in Kellyville, Texas. He had four top-ten country hits in the 1950s. He wrote each of them: It's No Secret; Remember Me, I'm The One Who Loves You; I Won't Go Huntin', Jake, But I'll Go Chasin' Women; and this one, which has been recorded by more than 60 artists:

Here are two more singers who went by their middle names – and they're the younger sisters of Barbara Mandrell. Louise Mandrell was born Thelma Louise Mandrell. She had 21 solo country hits, 1978-87, plus seven duets with R.C. Bannon and a duet with Eric Carmen. Irlene Mandrell was born Ellen Irlene Mandrell. She was a regular on Hee Haw for eight years and released two albums, one in 1983 and one in 2017. The three women hosted an NBC variety series, Barbara Mandrell & The Mandrell Sisters, from November 1980 to June 1982. Here is a clip from one episode. What classic country song did they sing" Kool & The Gang's Celebration. And who designed their horrible outfits???

In late 1961, Jimmy Dean's Big Bad John topped the country chart for two weeks and the Hot 100 for five weeks. The B-side was his version of that bizarre song by Stuart Hamblen. Here is I Won't Go Huntin' With You, Jake (But I'll Go Chasin' Wimmin). (Insert "Jimmy Dean sausage" joke here.)

Here – if anyone other than me cares – is another country singer who goes by his middle name. Easton Corbin has had six top-ten hits and two number ones: A Little More Country Than That in March 2010 and Roll With It – no, not the Steve Winwood song – in October 2010. His full name is Dan Easton Corbin. Here is All Over The Road, which peaked at #3 in September 2013. Amber Sym, who has appeared in Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler, plays "The Vixen."

Another country singer who went by his middle name – well, part of it, at least – is Hank Locklin, born Lawrence Hankins Locklin. His biggest hit was Please Help Me, I'm Falling, which went to number one on the country chart and #8 on the Hot 100 in 1960. Homer & Jethro did a hilarious parody of the song.

Oh boy, I found another country singer who goes by his middle name! What do I win? Wade Bowen, born Paul Wade Bowen in 1977 in Waco, Texas, has released 12 studio albums, one live album and one EP since 2002. From his 2008 album If We Ever Make It Home, here is Daddy & The Devil, a duet with Chris Knight:

Another country singer who went by his middle name is Bob Wills, born James Robert Wills in 1905 in Kosse, Texas. He formed the Texas Playboys in 1933. Among their hits are San Antonio Rose, Roly Poly, Faded Love, Stay A Little Longer, New Spanish Two Step, Sugar Moon, Texarkana Baby, Heart To Heart Talk, Bubbles In My Beer and Stars & Stripes On Iwo Jima, Here is their 1945 number one Smoke On The Water. It's a patriotic song predicting the defeat of the Axis in World War II and is not to be confused with Deep Purple's 1973 hit with the same title.

Does anyone besides me care about country singers who went by their middle name instead of their first name? No? Nobody? That's what I thought. Here is another one: Bluegrass singer/guitarist Merle Watson (1949-85) was born Eddy Merle Watson. He performed with, and recorded with, his father, banjoist/guitarist Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson. Here is a live performance from 1979:

On February 8, 2021, Jon shared a song by Cody Jinks. We can add him – Cody, not Jon – to the list of country singers who go by their middle name. His full name is Meredith Cody Jinks. He's had four top-five country albums. Here is a song from his latest album, Mercy, which reached #12 on the country album chart in April 2022.
