16. LOVE THEME FROM "ST. ELMO'S FIRE" - DAVID FOSTER

Maybe I'm the only one, but I enjoy some of the theme songs from 80s movies.

It seems like theme songs have lost their luster and are not appreciated as much anymore.

Are they even making the Top 40 these days?

One of my favorites

Is this the worst song to hit the top 40 in the 80s?

34. THE SMILE HAS LEFT YOUR EYES - ASIA

I'm mean really. This song is horrible. Flat out pathetic.

I bet sadchild will post songs from that week's hot 100, that never made the top 40, that are a billion times better than that Asia song

35. I GUESS THAT'S WHY THEY CALL IT THE BLUES - ELTON JOHN

Alan's Elton comment was definitely way off. Four lackluster previous releases? Did he mean...

Victim Of Love (had a #31 hit)
21 At 33 (had a #3 hit and a #39 hit)
The Fox (had a #21 hit and a #34 hit)
Jump Up! (had a #12 hit and a #13 hit)

Damn! If seven top 40 hits are are a slump, give me that 'slump' please!!

29. SOULS - RICK SPRINGFIELD

My first time hearing this ever I think. Odd, especially since I was a kinda-fan of Rick back in the day and still am.

19. TONIGHT I CELEBRATE MY LOVE - PEABO BRYSON/ROBERTA FLACK

"And hope that deep inside you'll feel it too".
You'll feel it deep inside you, but I'm not takin' nothin' deep inside me.

PS - Who names their kid Peabo?

17. TELEFONE (LONG DISTANCE LOVE AFFAIR) - SHEENA EASTON

Whenever I hear this, I think it's Laura Branigan. Especially the "I call you on telepone, you're never home" part. #ithinktheygotyouralias

"I can't find you anywhere, oh, oh. I call you on the telephone."
This was back before 'find my iPhone' when you could track that bastard.

10. P.Y.T. - MICHAEL JACKSON

If this song doesn't make you want to dance, check your pulse.

8. HEART AND SOUL - HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS

TIL this is a cover song. Had no clue.

#68 Rainbow "Street Of Dreams"

Great song (and fun video)

#97 Genesis "Mama"

Great song (but lame video)

Will never make the top 40
#46 Paul Simon "Allergies"
#48 Pointer Sisters "I Need You"
#54 Commodores "Only You"
#65 Earth Wind & Fire "Magnetic"
#66 Moody Blues "Blue World"
#68 Rainbow "Street Of Dreams"
#69 Alan Parsons Project "You Don't Believe"
#77 Kiss "Lick It Up"
#84 Men Without Hats "I Like"

Alan is wrong. He had 5. Looking at album positions:

A single man -- 15
Victim of Love -- 35
21 At 33 -- 13
The Fox -- 21
Jump Up -- 17

Prior to that he had a string of 11 top 10 (all but 1 top 5) including 6 straight #1 albums. So these are a disappointment relatively. Alan is also wrong about Too Low For Zero breaking the streak. It peaked at #25. It was a great album and one of my favourites but it was not a breakthrough. But artists would kill for his chart positions even during a slump.

No songs this week were terrible enough to warrant a Beavis & Butthead appearance, though "At This Moment" was a photo finish.

35. YOU BE ILLIN' - RUN-D.M.C.

"But homes you did not read it was a can of DOG FOOD"

29. THE RAIN - ORAN "JUICE" JONES

"Silly rabbit!"

20. WAR - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

I've always thought Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 1984 cover of "War" was excellent. With the Ronald Reagan impersonator and all. It was the flipside to "Two Tribes".

18. TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT - EDDIE MONEY

Tis the season to be listening to Eddie & Ronnie's other collab "Everybody Loves Christmas"

1. THE NEXT TIME I FALL IN LOVE - PETER CETERA WITH AMY GRANT

I recently wrote the genius.com bio for Amy Grant, and was shocked to learn the following:

In late 1993, Grant did a Christmas special with and performed in three concerts with Vince Gill, who was also married at the time. Grant later shared:

I knew from the tips of my toes that he was unlike anybody I had ever met. I was just so overwhelmed by him as a person that I finally came up behind him and wrapped my arms around him and said, ‘I’ve needed to do this all night.’

Grant’s relationship with Gill grew to the point she would note on a legal pad each time she was around him. By the end of the year, Grant reportedly told her husband, “I don’t love you anymore. You’re the biggest mistake I’ve ever made… I’ve given my heart to another man.” Rumors flew over the next few years about infidelity (which they have both denied).

Gill announced he was getting a divorce. She learned of it from a newspaper headline, to which her husband commented he ‘was grateful someone had finally made the first move’. Grant soon divorced Chapman and married Gill in 2000, explaining to The Tennessean that while her relationship with Gill ‘may have hastened the end of her marriage’, she believes ‘the final result was inevitable’. Chapman, however, disagreed, noting “a lot of people just don’t want to believe the obvious”.

Many devout Christian fans were shocked by the divorce, commenting, “Amy did not have one valid biblical reason to divorce her husband,” and “God hates divorce. It’s as simple as that.” Early on, even Grant’s children often made comments to Gill like “You make me sick. Put a shirt on.” and “If you ever hurt my mother, I’m going to kill you.”

#63 Jesse Johnson & Sly Stone "Crazay"

Whoa, quite the Prince / Morris Day photocopy.

Will never make the top 40

38. WHEN I'M WITH YOU - SHERIFF

Got some good news and some bad news. The good news is our single hit #1 in the US. The bad news is we broke up four years ago.

36. THANKS FOR MY CHILD - CHERYL "PEPSII" RILEY

33. YEAH, YEAH, YEAH - JUDSON SPENCE

Apparently I blocked out the fact I've heard this song one other time in my life (two years ago on another VJ 40). Hopefully I can block it out again.

22. DESIRE - U2

I've never been able to get into this song. Disliked it then. Dislike it now.

21. ARMEGEDDON IT - DEF LEPPARD

The only cassette I ever owned that I listened to so many times I wore it out and had to buy it again.

14. FINISH WHAT YA STARTED - VAN HALEN

@semipenguin Totally agreed.

For me OU812 is one of their worst albums, along with VH2 and VH3. Before OU812, Van Halen could do no wrong in my world. But they lost me on this one. Some of the songs are good, some are ok, some kinda suck.

12. TWO HEARTS - PHIL COLLINS

10. WALK ON WATER - EDDIE MONEY

Just saw him on The Kominsky Method, which, by the way, is a great show. And this is from somebody who hates 99.9% of TV shows.

#88 L'Trimm "Cars With The Boom"

Terrible song, but what a couple of cuties. The high school me is totally krushin' on them.

#94 Timelords "Doctorin' The Tardis"

Also known as the KLF. I had a friend who liked this song but I thought it was garbage. It's basically Gary Glitter's "Rock And Roll Part 2" with people saying "Doctor Who" over it. How it went to #1 in the UK is beyond me. But I do like KLF's "The White Room".

Won't make the top 40
#51 Tracy Chapman "Baby Can I Hold You"
#55 Siouxsie & The Banshees "Peek-A-Boo"
#58 Georgia Satellites "Hippy Hippy Shake"

#66 DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince "Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble"
#67 Randy Newman "It's Money That Matters"
