There's something off about the responses here. I don't think this had anything to do with the theater being in a high crime area. I don't think this guy is a loser or a bad person or an asshole. I think he's insane. His brain is broken. Nothing about this crime makes it sound like he was doing this for any kind of selfish, logical or criminal reason. It sounds like his chemistry is bad.
That doesn't make what he did any less horrific. But my response isn't like it would be if he was killing people to steal their cars or something. That would be reprehensible. It sounds like this guy was sick and never got treatment, which is sad.

I agree. It speaks somewhat to the broken Mental Health system in this country, and also to how easily it is to access not just guns, but body armor that no civilian has any business owning. But I also believe the death penalty is warranted in a case like this. And I'm not a 'kill em' all, let god sort them out' type.
i dont know how anyone could be anti death penalty here. he is clearly guilty, he clearly was caught right after he did it and there is a theater full of witnesses. he freakin killed 14 people and wounded so many more.
yes give him a trial and if there is anything majorly groundbreaking that it can make me think he is wrongly accused that would be the only time i have a hint of a thought this guy wouldnt be better off dead.

Killing him won't deter other crazy people from committing mass murder. It won't bring back any of the people he killed. It will punish him, but punish him for something he couldn't have stopped. It may satisfy a base desire for vengeance in some, but it won't benefit society in any tangible way.

I don't know. From what I read he booby trapped his apartment. To me that shows he had enough sense to know the police and probably FBI would be checking out his apartment. That really makes it look even more premeditated. So when he does go to court the insanity thing might not stick. It's hard to declare insanity when things look premeditated.
There's no doubt this was premeditated. That doesn't make his behavior more sane, though. What sane person arms themselves, booby traps their apartment and attacks a bunch of strangers in a movie theater?

Very sad indeed
Spoiler Alert
4th movie of the trilogy? Fortunately, for the above stated reason, that's the end of the Dark Night franchise. David Letterman leaked that Batman died earlier this week and has Warner Brothers pretty pissed .
i understand his state sponsored death wont deter anyone or really help any of the victims and their families. however he murdered 14 innocent people. he does not deserve to keep having a life any more.
society will benefit from him not being alive for anyone to have to deal with.
Yeah, that happens all the time. What is sad is that if he is deemed insane, he will be found not guilty. Then he will go into a facility where they will hem and haw and give him a green pill. He will be forced to take the green pill while in the facility. He will get better. Doctors and bureucrats will be estatic. They will deem him sane and release him with a supply of green pills. He will feel good. He will say why the fuck do I need to keep taking these green pills? He will stop. He will become insane again. And perhaps when the 4th movie of the trilogy is released, he will shoot another 71 people.
That is what is sad.
Yeah, that happens all the time.
Oh, wait, no it doesn't. It has never happened.
About 2 years ago a guy went nuts on a greyhound bus west of Winnipeg. He beheaded the poor fellow sitting next to him with a machette and ate his testicles and sliced him up. Held his head outside the bus window for all to see. Found not guilty by reason of insanity. Turns out this was his second such conviction. A few years before that he had gone brezerk and assulted somebody. He was put in an institution and treated with medication. A few years pass, he was released. Stopped taking his meds and some time later hopped on the bus to Winnipeg.
He is now being considered fit to be released for day trips. Expect him out in a year or too.
It sounds like you're describing Vince Li, but you're making up the part about his history. He had no history of violence. He was never institutionalized before he beheaded Tim McLean.
It's true that they are allowing him to leave the mental hospital for day trips, but he is accompanied by a cop and a nurse.
What's your motivation for twisting the facts? Do you have some hostility toward the mentally ill?
