'50s Gold playlist

I do not. 50s music was way before my time.
That makes no sense. Beethoven's 5th symphony was before your time too, but you'd recognize it. How about when it's New Year's in Times Square, and they play "It's a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong (which happens to be sadchild's #1 song). Do you just say "I don't recognize it, it was before my time"?

Granted, I'm not equating the familiarity of "You Belong to Me" with those, but all of us have "liked" songs that came out before we were born, or before we were able to hear it.

02 01 JO STAFFORD - YOU BELONG TO ME

If you listen to this one, you would recognize it
Thanks Scotch! I will listen later tonight. I hear that one all the time weekends on either 40's Junction or Siriusly Sinatra.
My first version I heard on Solid Gold Saturday Night by a male group. Maybe I can try to track that out later tonight too

Outstanding songs from all eras usually find their way to transcend eras. Since I have never heard this song, I guess this song is not one of them.

Maybe 98 or Aaron will come along and mention what movies or musicals used that song, because I instantly recognize it, but I'm not sure where from.

If you listen to the opening lyric "See the pyramids along the Nile" and it doesn't ring a bell, then that's your honest experience. That's why we comment on the countdowns in the first place; different people recognize different things. The only thing I have a beef with is this

This directly contradicts with this

Johnny Standley was an actor and comedian who toured with Horace Heidt in the 1950s. It's In The Book, a parody of fundamentalist preachers, was number one on Billboard's Best Selling Pop Singles chart for two weeks in November 1952 and spent 16 weeks in the top ten. In 1955, Horace Heidt hosted the Swift Show Wagon, a 39-episode NBC variety series sponsored by Swift Premium. Each episode took place in a different city. Here is a live performance of It's In The Book. The recording sold more than two million copies and was awarded an RIAA gold record – and it is the most annoying comedy record of all time! I doubt anyone will disagree.

Does not jog anything.

I don't see the contradiction. 50s music is before my time. I don't remember or know a lot of it. But some songs have lived on and are recognizable. Same with every era. If I had grown up in the. 50s listening to that music, then a lot more if it would be nearer and dearer to my heart or at least recognizable.

Without going down the Memebag vortex, your initial reason was simply that it was from the 50s. And then later, you acknowledged that you do recognize some songs from all eras (including the 50s). that's all.
Yes, both statements are true. Not sure why this is so hard to understand.

Jo Stafford's You Belong To Me was number one for five weeks in September-October 1952 and spent 17 weeks in the top ten. It has been featured in the movies The Last Picture Show (1971), Tin Men (1987), The Deep Blue Sea (2011), The Nun (2018), The Irishman (2019) and Don't Worry Darling (2022) and in episodes of Fallout, The White Lotus and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

This version by Jersey City quintet The Duprees reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1962.

First, you said you don't know songs from the 50s, then you said you did. They can't both be true.
I said the 50s music was before my time. So I do not know most of the music from the 50s. However, like all generations some music becomes part of the common vernacular. Those songs I know. So yes, I know some songs from the 50s but the decade itself was before my time. All true. And I still don't know the song you posted.

Very good. Here is your prize: Jim Reeves' version of You Belong To Me from his 1957 album cleverly titled Jim Reeves. Floyd Cramer plays piano and the Jordanaires are the background singers.

Yes, all true. But your initial verdict on that song was "I don't know it because the 50s was before my time". That's what I took issue with. You've since added a whole bunch of caveats, disclaimers, and asterisks to your statement, but that's moot now. All you had to say - from the start - was "don't know it".

What a strange thing to take issue with. It was before my time .... and don't know it.
