You've heard the expression "Banned in Boston"? The Everly Brothers' Wake Up Little Susie was banned in Boston. The single, about a young couple who fall asleep at a drive-in movie, was released on September 2, 1957 and soon all four top-40 stations in Boston (WBZ, WCOP, WHIL and WMEX) began playing it. The lyrics, in part:
Wake up, little Susie, wake up
We've both been sound asleep; wake up, little Susie, and weep
The movie's over, it's four o'clock, and we're in trouble deep
Well, I told your mama that you'd be in by ten
Well, Susie, baby, looks like we goofed again
The movie wasn't so hot; it didn't have much of a plot
We fell asleep, our goose is cooked, our reputation is shot
Wake up, little Susie
We gotta go home
The Boston Catholic Diocese decreed that the lyrics are "suggestive" and ordered all local radio stations to quit playing it. And they did. Memo to the Boston Catholic Diocese: There is nothing "suggestive" about falling asleep. Here is a live performance from 1983:
