The 12/20/1986 from December had many of the entries already in the 40.

32. (YOU GOTTA) FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT (TO PARTY) - BEASTIE BOYS
I played the Licensed to Ill cassette constantly.

25. TALK TO ME - CHICO DEBARGE
His older brother was at the lower reaches of the 100 trying to break into the 40.

22. NOBODY'S FOOL - CINDERELLA
I thought this came around later for some reason.

21. STOP TO LOVE - LUTHER VANDROSS
There was scene in the video for this record where gas station sign was shown. Unleaded gas was listed at 65 cents!!!

20. YOU GOT IT ALL - THE JETS
Written by Rupert Holmes.

Will never make the top 40

#65 Communards "Never Can Say Goodbye"
Jimmy Summerville was in the "Never make the top 40" last week as a part of the group, Bronski Beat.

#66 Lone Justice "Shelter"
I had never heard of this group. There's an interesting documentary about the group on YouTube.

#67 Five Star "If I Say Yes"
I have a soft spot for them. I wish they would have cracked the 40.

#70 El Debarge "Someone"
I remembered this after a listen. This a standard ballad.

#74 Daryl Hall "Someone Like You"
I thought this made the 40.

#75 Sweet Sensation "Hooked On You" (original release)
The remix hit the 40 in 89.

#76 a-ha "Cry Wolf"
@sadchild - I thought one was 40 worthy. It fared better in the UK.

#90 Nocera "Summertime, Summertime"
Early freestyle track which charted well on the Dance chart.

#95 Ron & The DC Crew "Ronnie's Rap"
I listed to this and regretted remembering it. Just awful.

#96 Uptown "(I Know) I'm Losing You"
This was a huge club hit.

32. (YOU GOTTA) FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT (TO PARTY) - BEASTIE BOYS
I was slightly old to bond with this one instantly, it had a great attitude, but I played guitar and was into Van Halen, so I couldn’t get over the “My First Guitar Solo” thing they had going on.
It took a while for me to find the appeal of the solo too.

22. NOBODY'S FOOL - CINDERELLA
I thought this came around later for some reason
That seems right to me.

I saw them open for Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, 38 Special, or someone back in the day.

20. YOU GOT IT ALL - THE JETS
Written by Rupert Holmes.
I did not know that. I barely remember the song, but I’m glad that Rupert was still making some cash.

@HecticArt By 1987 I felt hard rock/hair metal was in a slump. Ratt, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister and Motley Crue released albums that I thought were all weak around this time. And VH's OU812 was just around the corner, another disappointment in my world. This was a fresh take on what the hard rock attitude was all about, so I took to it immediately. But yes that solo is pure sh*t. It's on my list of "great song/awful solo" songs, right next to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Californication".

@seasalt43 I'll have to re-listen to "Cry Wolf". And 65 cents a gallon?! Crazy!! The lowest I've ever paid for gas was 97 cents back in 1990.

My wife hates Californication.

I prefer Weird Al Yankovics version of "Smells Like Nirvana". Hits the nail right on the head.

Yeah, I was never really into the "Hair" stuff once it earned it's LA Strip nickname. When VH was just considered a rock band, I was a fan. Poison, Motley, and Aqua-net/makeup bands never did a lot for me. I was looking for bands that could play, and still listening to tons of Rush

I got into hair bands at 12/13 years old. Even then, I thought the look was ridiculous, and guys singing so high was odd, but looking past that, I was really into it.

ALL CLASSICS, GOOD FROM START TO END
Motley Crue 'Shout At The Devil'
Ratt 'Out Of The Cellar'
Quiet Riot 'Metal Health'
Twisted Sister 'Stay Hungry'
Def Leppard 'Pyromania'
Van Halen '1984' and '5150'

A lot of the mid-80s follow-ups were inferior, so I started to bail

A STEP DOWN
MC 'Theatre Of Pain' had some good songs, but a lot were meh. 'Girls Girls Girls' only had a couple I liked.
Ratt 'Invasion Of Your Privacy' was good, but not as good. 'Dancing Undercover' did nothing for me.
Quiet Riot 'Condition Critical' was a bomb, I liked a few songs but it was a big step down.
Twisted Sister 'Come Out And Play' was just plain awful.
Van Halen 'OU812' I really tried to like this but eventually stopped listening, there's a few on there I still like though.
I missed Cinderella and Poison's first albums, because I started ignoring hair metal around 86/87.

Then some good albums started coming out again

A STEP BACK UP, GOOD START TO END
Def Leppard 'Hysteria' (1987 while I wasn't into the hair scene so much, but this couldn't be ignored)
Guns N Roses 'Appetite' (some would call it hair, some wouldn't)
Winger 'Winger'
Bulletboys 'Bulletboys'
Poison 'Open Up And Say Aaah'
Cinderella 'Long Cold Winter'
Ratt 'Reach For The Sky'
Extreme 'Extreme' (well, skip 'Song For Love') and 'Pornograffiti' (even the two acoustic ballads are good - in their own way)

Then hair lost me for good with most of the follow-ups

ALL DONE
GNR 'Illusion 1 & 2' (some good songs, but a lot of mediocre stuff)
Winger 'Heart Of The Young' (a few okay singles, but a big step down)
Bulletboys 'Freakshow' (no interest)
Cinderella 'Heartbreak Station' (two okay singles, but a big step down)
Ratt 'Detonator' (a few okay singles, but a step down)
Extreme 'Three Sides' (no interest)

By 89/90 I was into Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails, Alice In Chains, etc and hair bands were a dying breed (and not just for me).

And that's a lot more than anyone probably wanted to know!

I'd be interested in hearing your take on the song (good or bad). :)

I took a screen capture of the gas prices. I remember paying around 95 cents sometime in the 90s.

Right. Rush.

I think I’m just a couple of years older than you. The shift is subtle, but the description is the same.
Leppard worked for me till all of the cash-grab ballads, VH till all the soap operas band drama, G&R the same, Extreme while they were active, Ratt & Bullet Boys while MTV was still playing music, but the rest I wasn’t really into a whole lot except for a song here or there.

@seasalt43 Listening to "Cry Wolf" now. Doesn't sound like the a-ha songs I know, sounds like a different band to me. Not diggin' it either way.

Oh, and this @ 2 mins:

best_of_will_ferrell_360_538631.jpg

@HecticArt Someone at my work is a few years older than me and has the same taste in rock as you. Early Halen, early Leppard, early Aerosmith, pre-heavy-synth Rush, Randy-era Ozzy, etc. Whereas my fav Rush is 'Hold Your Fire', fav Ozzy is 'No Rest For the Wicked', fav Aerosmith is 'Permanent Vacation' and fav Lepp are 'Pyromania' and 'Hysteria'.

Van Halen is the exception for me though. I like VH1, WACF and FW a lot (but not VH2 or DD).

I like the synth Rush a lot, even though the guitar isn't as prominent, there’s still a lot of hook and twists and turns.

Surprisingly, their last couple of albums, the rockers, never quite resonated for me. I should listen again for science.

The same person I work with (above) was listening to the all-Rush channel on SXM, and complained that a half-dozen songs were getting played every three hours (Closer To The Heart and New World Man especially), but that not much from the 90s and 2000s was getting played.

From '91 on, I like these ones:

Dreamline
Roll The Bones
Stick It Out
Cold Fire
Nobody's Hero
Test For Echo
Far Cry
Headlong Flight

I listened most of the time the tribute channel was on, and was annoyed hat I didn’t hear a drum solo till the last day.

It seems that whoever programmed the channel was mostly into Hemispheres and Caress of Steel.

20. Prince – I Wanna Be Your Lover

Interesting read:

In 1981, Prince and his yet-unnamed band hit the stage of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. For two nights, they’d serve as the opening act for rock icons the Rolling Stones. Prince was already a hit-maker on the R&B scene. “I Wanna Be Your Lover” from his self-titled sophomore LP nabbed No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 a year earlier. Mick Jagger was a big fan, and this could have been Prince’s big break in front of a white, mainstream audience.

Three songs in, as the crowd threw rotting chicken and glass bottles of whiskey at his head, Prince walked off the stage, leaving his band behind. The next day in his LA studio, Prince didn’t mention it to his engineer, Peggy McCreary (who spoke much about her work with the artist in a wonderful podcast published by Minnesota Public Radio program The Current), but the tireless work they performed in the next two years made one thing clear – Prince was forever changed by that disaster, and rather than hide from the pain, he used it as fuel to become one of the greatest musical artists of all time.

Those fateful sessions in LA and his home studio in Chanhassen, MN, gave birth to his fifth studio full-length, a double album called 1999.

12. Rupert Holmes – Escape

My friend's roommate's guess at #1. I knew it was the last #1 of the 70s, so it was very very unlikely to still be at the top of the charts this many weeks later.

6. Teri DeSario/KC – Yes, I’m Ready

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

2. Captain & Tennille – Do That To Me One More Time

My guess at #1.

1. Michael Jackson – Rock With You

My friend's son's guess at #1. He's been right 7 weeks in a row now.

#41 Dann Rogers "Looks Like Love Again"

Stuck at #41 for two weeks, then dropped a 'whopping' 38 spots.

#46 Rod Stewart "I Don't Want To Talk About It"

This is from his 1975 album Atlantic Crossing. Why is it charting in 1980?

#63 Robert John "Lonely Eyes"

Another one that made it all the way to #41, but no further.

#65 George Burns "I Wish I Was Eighteen Again"

I love listening to old Burns & Allen on SXM Radio Classics. Also Jack Benny, especially when Mel Blanc is on.

#67 Aerosmith "Remember (Walking in The Sand)"

The first rock album I ever bought. "No Surprize" is still one of their best songs ever. The rest of the album didn't really hold up so much though.

#75 Joyce Cobb "Dig The Gold"

What the heck did I just listen to?

#80 Boomtown Rats "I Don't Like Mondays"

Not surprised that it didn't break the 40, but man what a great song.

#97 Inmates "Dirty Water"

"Down by the banks of the river Thames ... Oh London you're my home." Sorry chaps, taint dirtier than the Charles River in Boston was.

Will never reach the top 40:
#41 Dann Rogers "Looks Like Love Again"
#46 Rod Stewart "I Don't Want To Talk About It"
#48 Molly Hatchet "Flirtin' With Disaster"
#53 Tavares "Bad Times"
#61 Robert Palmer "Can We Still Be Friends"
#63 Robert John "Lonely Eyes"
#64 Sister Sledge "Got To Love Somebody"
#65 George Burns "I Wish I Was Eighteen Again"
#67 Aerosmith "Remember (Walking in The Sand)"
#68 Patrice Rushen "Haven't You Heard"
#69 Turley Richards "You Might Need Somebody"
#70 38 Special "Rockin' Into The Night"
#72 Mike Pinera "Goodnight My Love"
#75 Joyce Cobb "Dig The Gold"
#76 Kenny Nolan "Us And Love"
#80 Boomtown Rats "I Don't Like Mondays"
#83 Yellow Magic Orchestra "Computer Game"
#84 Blondie "The Hardest Part"
#85 David Gates "Where Does The Lovin' Go"
#86 Twennynine "Peanut Butter"
#87 Willie Nelson "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys"
#88 Dana Valery "I Don't Want To Be Lonely"
#89 Narada Michael Walden "I Shoulda Loved Ya"
#90 April Wine "I Like To Rock"
#91 Lobo "Holdin' On For Dear Love"
#93 Pleasure "Glide"
#95 Leif Garrett "Memorize Your Number"
#97 Inmates "Dirty Water"
#98 Switch "I Call Your Name"
#100 Gamma "I'm Alive"

They did 1980/02/16 before. Very similar countdown.

2. Captain & Tennille – Do That To Me One More Time

My guess at #1.

1. Michael Jackson – Rock With You

My friend's son's guess at #1. He's been right 7 weeks in a row now.

Had it been 02/16, you would have been right. I would search your friend's son's browser history. I think you are being played.

My guess was Call Me but this countdown was way too early.

#63 Robert John "Lonely Eyes"

Another one that made it all the way to #41, but no further.

I thought this would have made it into the bottom 20.

#80 Boomtown Rats "I Don't Like Mondays"

Not surprised that it didn't break the 40, but man what a great song.

Did very well in Canada. My understanding is it was banned in the USA or at least a significant part of it. I know Bob Geldof always pointed to this as the reason the band never really took off there. This was their best song.

Will never reach the top 40:
#63 Robert John "Lonely Eyes"
#80 Boomtown Rats "I Don't Like Mondays"
#87 Willie Nelson "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys"
#90 April Wine "I Like To Rock"

These songs should have all been top 40.

This just in -- my friend's roommate picked the #1 song correctly, my friend's son picked #12 (ending his 6-week streak). I got them backwards, sorry.

Even if my friend's son did get it right, making it 7 weeks in a row, I would believe it. I know him personally and his knowledge of 80s music is unreal. I will say, though, that I'm surprised he picked "Escape". I would've thought he knew it was the last #1 of the 1970s (even I knew that).

It was also the second #1 song of the 80s (Please Don't Go was first kocking Escape out of #1 for only 1 week). Was knocked out of #1 for good by Rock With You (the #1 for this week) on 01/19. Not too far off.
