80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

No real surprises in the 'Won't Reach' list, maybe the Clash but even then they weren't exactly Top 40 material.

Won't reach the top 40
#61 Dolly Parton "I Will Always Love You"
I always thought her version did better. It is a tolerable listen as opposed to Whiney's butchering of it years later.

Won't reach the top 40
#52 Clash "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"
#80 Don Henley "Johnny Can't Read"
#81 Toronto "Your Daddy Don't Know"
#93 April Wine "Enough Is Enough"

This weeks surprises. The last 2 were played a lot here in Canada being Canadian bands.

40. LET ME GO - RAY PARKER JR.

Starting the "Never Heard It Before" list right from the jump this week, which is weird because I have his "greatest hits" CD & I assume this on there. It's not familiar to me at ALL, though.
Peaked at #38, #3 R&B

39. I REALLY DON'T NEED NO LIGHT - JEFFREY OSBORNE

2 for 2 on "NHIB" songs!!!! The hell was I doin' back in 1982?
Peaked at this position, #3 R&B

I only knew the Jeffrey Osborne track which was much better than "The Woo Woo song".

I think the lack of awareness of these songs are two-fold. 1) The bottom of the forty usually contains songs that were in the process of being added to more radio stations. If the momentum didn't pick up, it may have resulted in a peak. 2) There may not have been very much music video exposure.

35. PERSONALLY - KARLA BONOFF
28. IF THE LOVE FITS WEAR IT - LESLIE PEARL

I didn't recall these so I had to look them up.
36. LET ME TICKLE YOUR FANCY - JERMAINE JACKSON
Devo is credited on this track which is interesting.

21. OUT OF WORK - GARY U.S. BONDS
Interesting entry from a singer that first had success in the 60s.
18. AMERICAN MUSIC - POINTER SISTERS
I didn't remember this one either.
13. ONLY THE LONELY - MOTELS
One of my favorites.
12. LOVE IS IN CONTROL - DONNA SUMMER
Donna was keeping her career going. I read she wasn't too fond of Quincy Jones.
4. HOLD ME - FLEETWOOD MAC
3. ABRACADABRA - STEVE MILLER BAND
Two more favs.

You stay away from that Ron Johnson, Stacy Hamilton!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( 50 BONUS MONOPOINTS FOR ANYONE WHO GETS THIS REFERENCE WITHOUT GOOGLING )
Did you want to marry him!?!?! He's a stereo salesman!!!

#42 Missing Persons "Words"
Such a good song. It should have been close to 20.
#52 Clash "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"
I thought this would have made it to 30 or 25 or so.
#54 Huey Lewis & The News "Workin' For A Livin'"
I thought this would have been a top 10 song.

The 10 songs below the 100 from 8/21/1982:

Bubbling Under The Hot 100
#101 Stacy Lattisaw "Don't Throw It All Away" (peaked at this position, #9 R&B)
#102 Imagination "Just an Illusion" (peaked at the position, #27 R&B, #15 Dance, #2 UK).
#103 Stephanie Mills "Last Night" (peaked at 101, #14 R&B)

#109 Stray Cats "Stray Cat Strut" (entered the chart at #43 on 12/25/82, peaked at #3)
#110 Tommy Tutone "Which Man are You" (peaked at #101)

Comments:
#101 - Stacy was 14 when this was released. The only thing she should have been throwing away is the garbage.
#102 - A fav of mine. I think it could have made it into the lower reaches of the 100.
#105 - Another fun track, but a little too dancy for the 100.
#108 - This track is credited to Amy Holland too.
#109 - It took a long time to enter the chart. I wonder what catapulted the song into the 100. Maybe video airplay.

Here's some backstory
When I first heard it, I thought "Is this Prince? No, can't be because 1999 is about to hit the shelves and this ain't on it."

If it was Jermaine’s idea to seek out DEVO, it was a good one, and Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale—introduced here as “Spud and Pud Devo”—gamely agreed to pitch in.

Speaking of Gerald Casale, he just released a new song and I like it

The only thing she should have been throwing away is the garbage.
LOL
#109 Stray Cats "Stray Cat Strut" (entered the chart at #43
It went from Bubbling Under straight to #43? Wow! As Nina would put it, it went up a "whopping" amount.

I found this quote too; "And it was his idea to have the Devo members sing the backing vocals to enhance the new wave feel of the song."

This wasn't bad at all!

It fell off the Bubbling Under chart before its ascent. I took a peek at the Billboard Magazine for the week before and the song was only added to about five radio stations. It could have been due to a TV appearance too.

#102 Imagination "Just an Illusion" (peaked at the position, #27 R&B, #15 Dance, #2 UK).

I wouldn't be familiar with this group at all, except for having listened to this podcast literally just last week :

I thought it would be more fun. Too much Jermaine, not enough DEVO.

I would give MTV credit for their big jump in fame.

erp......I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Fun, but I want a little more hook.

EMI released Out Of Work in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Spain and the Netherlands. The Japanese single was titled 失業ロック
and the Spanish single was titled Fuera Del Trabajo – even though the song was in English! Go figure!
