34: THE LOVER IN ME – SHEENA EASTON

Let's talk about the lover in me? WTH does that mean? "So girl, there's a lover in you. Let's talk about that."

#56 Fleetwood Mac "As Long As You Follow"
Big surprise for me.
#63 Siouxsie & The Banshees "Peek-A-Boo"

Another UK #1 hit.

I wrote about Chan Romero recording The Hippy Hippy Shake in 1959. Inspired by La Bamba singer Ritchie Valens, Romero had written the song a year earlier, More than 40 artists have recorded The Hippy Hippy Shake including Billy Fury, Mud, the Georgia Satellites, the Fabulous Gemtones and Captain Cardiac & The Coronaries. Here is the second recorded version of the song, by Little Tony & His Brothers, released in September 1959, Antonio Ciacci was born in Italy to parents from San Marino. He called himself Little Tony after Little Richard. His brothers were Alberto and Enrico. They released four EPs and one single in Italy and Tony went on to release 31 solo singles in Italy.

Okay 7
Bad 23

One more good and two more okay since the last time they did this countdown 4 years ago. Listening to the VJ each week is definitely still softening me up.

These are on my fav songs of all time list, but not in the top 333. They're in the "700+" extended list.

All three of us guessed this one correctly. First #1 of the decade. Easy peasy.

#33 John Cougar "I Need A Lover"
#37 Anne Murray "Broken Hearted Me"
#39 Richie Furay "I Still Have Dreams"

Commentary:
  • I had never heard "Stay With Me Till Dawn" until I compiled the playlist. It was instantly my fav on this week's list.
  • "You Can Get Over" stayed on the chart for 12 weeks and peaked at #101 for 2 weeks. I'm sure I've heard it on Studio 54 before.
  • "Runaway Love" stayed on the chart for 10 weeks and peaked at #105.
  • The band Oak didn't have their own Wiki page, but were mentioned on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Maine#Popular_music. Also, I found the following about the lead singer: Rick Pinette - Leader and vocalist of the Maine-based band Oak. He grew up in Berlin, New Hampshire but moved to Maine at the height of his career.
The four singles that dropped from last week had different fates.
  • "Only Time" by Robert John bubbled for seven weeks and didn't break the 100 (#102 peak).
  • "Takin' it Back" by Breathless bubbled for two weeks, spent a week in obscurity, then debuted at #96 on 1/12/80 (#92 peak).
  • "New Lines on Love" by Sniff "N' The Tears bubbled for two weeks and didn't break the 100 (#108 peak).
  • "Bad Times" by Tavares debuted at #93 on 1/5/80 (#47 peak).
