Because The Night, written by Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen, was originally a #13 hit for the Patti Smith Group in June 1978. Springsteen recorded the song in 1978. It was intended for – but not included on – his Darkness At The Edge Of Town album. It was finally released in 2010, on the 21-track CD The Promise. The 10,000 Maniacs version, recorded live for the MTV Unplugged series, reached #11 in February 1994.

A version by Kim Wilde with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra appeared on the 1998 album Philharmania, which also included songs by Roger Daltrey, Huey Lewis, Bonnie Tyler, Midge Ure, Justin Hayward, Status Quo and others.

This isn't a bad cover of this song. It's almost not a cover as most of Meat Loaf songs are Jim Stienman tunes. But in this case, this song was released in the early 80s (I want to say 1981) and just brushed the top 40. His original version is much better at least to me. It was only on the radio for 3-4 weeks before it disappeared. Hearing it again 10+ years later was a bonus.
