There's, like, the Galleria

I have never understood the expression "larger than life." How can "life" have a size? And how can any person or thing be larger than it? Now there is another expression I don't understand. How can the economy have a shape?

They had to think hard to rename the concept of "the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer". If someone said "K-shaped economy" to me, I'd punch them in the face.

Nancy Pelosi, a member of the United States House Of Representatives since 1987, announced today that she will not seek re-election. KQED editor Scott Shafer, speaking the morning on NPR affiliate KPCC, said the Affordabe Care Act "would not have passed without her putting her shoulder to the wheel."

Really? What kind of wheel? Where was it? Does anyone have video of her doing that?

If I remember right, Ancestry.com tells me I'm 1% North African. Can I use the N word in my upcoming rap album? And can I say "word to THE mother" instead of "word to YOUR mother"?

Headline in today's Los Angeles Times:

Two National Guard troops shot in D.C.

A troop is "a group of soldiers." Two troops were not shot. It was two troopers.

At work they are starting to use the word "furlough" to incorrectly refer to the 2 weeks around Christmas and New Years were no work ever gets done. The word is bantered about by various project managers who have picked it up as the latest buzzword to make it seem like they have a handle on things. I find it annoying.

My boss says "I appreciate you" instead of well done or good job. The first time he said it to me I hadn't heard it before so I thought it was like cool and nice. But I have since become aware that it's the new version of like saying good work or well done when ending a call.

Now every time I hear it I want to tell the hom that he sounds like an idiot. It's the adult version of fucking 6/7 and shut the fuck up and just say thank you for the hard work or whatever. Using a trendy new term of phrase as an adult makes you sound dumb.

But what I actually say is oh thanks boss and then I come here and bitch about it to you guys.

That would drive me crazy. I'm totally with you. A furlough is Is a leave of absence if you have to take care of a family thing or a surgery or whatever. It's not Christmas fucking vacation.

That's as annoying as "quiet quitting".

Yeah this came from a tv show. One person at my work started saying it and I thought it was nice, but odd. Then another started saying it. A year later I was hearing it every day. I don't like to complain about it because it's a nice thought, but it still catches me weird every time - like, why not just 'thanks' or 'i appreciate that'.

It's one of my "four things I started hearing multiple times every day a few years ago" checklist items...

4 four things i hear every day literally of course appreciate lets go.webp

"Rage bait," the Oxford English Dictionary's word of the year – two words, actually – was first used in 2002 by someone on Usenet complaining that he felt angry when another driver who wanted to pass him flashed his headlights. Over time, the definition broadened and the expression became overused and annoying.

Oxford's Word of the Year 2025 is utterfly infuriating

I think when PMs speak they annoy me. They seem to speak in buzzwords which for the most part are borrowed to mean something different. The latest when things get delayed "We need to socialize the new date". Socialize? More stolen words.

"Cyber Monday Week Continues"

If It is Cyber Monday ... IT'S NOT A WEEK!
The Toyota ads are like this. There is ALWAYS a sale going on. A few years back, they turned "Black Friday" into "Black 10 Days", which is stupid all by itself. Now that the black 10 days are over, it's Toyotathon! That's the totally made-up name they came up with many years ago, to fill-in the gaps between regular sales events; such as Presidents Day, the end-of year clearance event, etc. Notice that everything is an "event".

The whole "cyber Monday" thing irks me. Like 20 years ago, maybe it wasn't so stupid to say "cyber Monday". But referring to online shopping as "cyber"-anything is just lame.
