I haven't read a book in a really long time. Today I decided to find a free novel on Prime reading and get back into it. I picked Edge of Collapse by Kyla Stone. It's about some lady who is being held captive at some dude's house then an EMP goes off and she's freed and they guy comes looking for her. So basically a cat and mouse story with an EMP twist.
Anyway I went to that park I mentioned in the bike thread and sat by the lake and read a few chapters. It was nice. They have these little areas that jet out from the path towards the lake. They aren't piers but they do go right to the edge of the lake. I also did that Word Runner thing where the Kindle app gives you one word at a time. I find I can read a lot faster that way. I think I'll do it again tomorrow.

3 books I'm reading now in different formats.
Hardcover: A Promised Land, Barack Obama. Real inside baseball stuff, very interesting read!
Kindle: Thinking Fast and Slow. It's sort of a psychology book that explains the mind system 1 being the system that makes you tell someone to fuck off. System 2 is the system that thinks about it before telling someone to fuck off. Most people have a lazy or non-existent system 2.
Audio: Atomic Habits. Really haven't gotten to this one yet, but since I'm walking more I'll probably listen to it on my daily walks.

Starting off at 1.5 miles. Step it up by a mile and a half a week until I hit 6. So far so good. Between that and Intermittent fasting I stand to lose quite a bit.

Finished reading 'Steve Jobs' by Walter Issaccson on the Kindle.
Real interesting biography, solidifies my thinking that he was a genius, also kind of a weirdo with his alternative medicine diets, and could be a real asshole a lot of times, but I think by the time his life ended he realized that, and managed to make amends with a lot of people before it ended.
I share the same enthusiasm with him for the bridge between Science/Technology and Art, probably why I like Apple so much.
Not sure what I'll be reading next (maybe FINALLY finishing Obama's book) since I'm in school and switching contracts at work to a position that'll have me on the road a LOT!

Today I bought the first (non-textbook) book I can remember in a very long time. And I think this is the first ever digital (Kindle) book I've ever bought. Until now I've just read the free stuff that comes with Prime.
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. It's about some astronaut who wakes up and remembers he is like 12 light years away from Earth and was sent there to somehow save our planet. Should be a fun read.
Weir is the guy who wrote The Martian. I think he only has 3 full length novels so far but he has quickly become my new favorite author now that Crichton is dead. He's writes in a similar style so it's no wonder I like him. Like Crichton he mixes a lot of carefully researched real science into his fiction so it make the whole thing more believable. I'm looking forward to getting into it but I still haven't finished the last novel I talked about here so I'm pounding that out now before I start Hail Mary.

Anyone ever read Dune? I finally finished my last book and with the new Villeneuve movie coming out soon I'm thinking of buying the Kindle book and reading it before my new Weir book. Apparently it's the first of a series of 6 books. I really know almost nothing about it other than it being sci fi and the trailers I've seen for the October movie.

I think when I was like 10, I read 1 or 2 books in the series. Damned if I remember, I can only picture the movie now.

Amazon sent me an email saying I could get $5 off an Ayn Rand book. I had a couple of her books on my shopping list so I guess that's where it came from.
I decided to give her a shot and bought The Fountainhead. I was reading it at the mechanic's place and while I'm only like 20 pages in, one thing is abundantly clear...
THIS BOOK IS ABOUT A FUCKING ARCHITECT!!!
What a truly awful mistake this was. Other than the history of the Dallas Cowboys, I can't think of anything I could find more repulsing to spend my time reading about. But I'm in it now so I guess I'll see this one through.

Interestingly, it seems to be a book that right-wingers reference, regarding the horrors of socialism. That's if I have the right book; I could be mistaken.

All I really knew about her going in was that her work was sometimes a GOP talking point. I assume it's either this one or Atlas Shrugged. Those are the two I had heard of before searching her on the Kindle store.
