trunk design that has 2 rods underneath the trunk. This means under those rods, the trunk space is not usable as the rods will crush whatever is there
Can you find a pic of this? I'm having trouble picturing it. Two rods you mean that like hold the trunk up? Or the ones that hold that little privacy thing in place so you can't see what's in the trunk?

I think all the cars we've had (going back quite a way) have had that.

Are you talking about BMWs? Because maybe this was a luxury car thing that's been around forever that has now trickled down. But I have never had it before in the Chevys, Pontiacs, Toyotas and Chryslers that I've had in the past.

They are the ones that operate the trunk. Pic below from Amazon trying to sell the net.

Ok, so #1, those are not rods under the trunk. I believe you're referring to the support arms for the trunk lid. The trunk lid is short; they want the lid to swing way up, so it won't get in the way when you're loading. If they did a hatchback, or a longer trunk lid, it wouldn't need to do this.

But also, they're just saving money. If they had a better arm design, and had it fit into pockets in the body, it wouldn't crush whatever you put there.

Someone is a bit picky this morning. I think that the saving them money and thus increasing their profit margin is the most likely explanation.

I've had cars with that kind of trunk lid support bracket before.
They would get in the way once and a while, but weren't too much of a problem.

Ohhhh ok I see now. Thank Scotch. I get what I'd rather was talking about now. My current car is a hatchback and the RAV truck opened to the side so I haven't dealt with a normal trunk in awhile.

They are saving money to sell the cars at a lower price.

Yeah, for the past 20 years, we've had either convertibles, wagons, pick-ups, or SUVs. So no regular trunks either.

You guys ever see this before irl? Today was the first time for me.

Maybe there's another explanation but the only time I've ever seen a car with a selfie stick type thing like that on the back is when I was watching those YouTube videos about cars that run from cops on purpose. They're pretty fun videos. Also, this guy has a temp tag which anybody can print out at home. So, that seems to fit. The ones I've seen on YouTube don't have any plate at all but this guy was out during the middle of the day so maybe it's a daytime thing.

There might be a perfectly rational and legal explanation that I'm missing but I like to think this is one of those guys.

I'm not sure if I'm repeating myself but all of you guys with relatively new cars, are you able to top off at the gas station?

With every car I've had before this one I would always top off before a trip to Disney or whatever but this car won't let me. As soon as the pump stops by itself if I try to put any more in, it just spits it out and then I get gas all over the side of my car.

Mine will usually take $1-2 more. But I know in theory you are not supposed to top off. Maybe they made it such that that point is driven in.

Mrs. Scotch's car doesn't even have a filler cap. Once you open the filler door, there's the filler neck with a flap in it. The nozzle just pushes through the flap (sounds strangely like virgin sex). I think the recess of the filler neck means that when the sensor in the pump nozzle is tripped, there's not much left to go.

Of course, I wouldn't know this, as I'm notorious for not filling-up. I don't like sitting for 10 minutes while the tank fills, so I usually stop at less than a full tank, typically at some round dollar figure.

How big is your tank? I spend like 3 minutes filling up mine (44l -- usually takes 37-40l).

I don't know liters (or litres). It's 16 gallons. My previous 3 cars (going back 20 years) have had 12 to 13 gallon tanks. So I'm not accustomed to putting say 14 gallons into the (not quite empty) tank at once. It's not really 10 minutes, maybe it's 3 solid minutes. But usually it's cold out, and when I'm getting gas, that means I'm on my way somewhere. I'm always running late, so I like just putting in 10 or 11 gallons and going.

Also, my car is specified for 91 octane. I try to alternate between 89 and 93 on subsequent fill-ups, so I only do a half-tank at a time. The car will run OK on 89, but it's not as responsive.

I haven't tried topping off in years, probably a decade+. I use the doohickey on the pump that keeps the gas going without you having to hold it. When it clicks, I hang up the nozzle and jet.
Exactly. Who wants to stand around in the bitter cold, squeezing the handle on and off until gas spews out all over the car and my hands? What will that get you?
