Celebrities Getting Into Trouble

Donna Motsinger waited 51 years to sue Cosby. The Los Angeles Times story gives additional details:

"Motsinger sued Cosby in 2023, alleging that, at the time, she was working at a Sausalito, California restaurant called the Trident that was popular with celebrities, including Cosby, according to the complaint her attorneys filed September 27 of that year. One night, Motsinger accepted Cosby’s invitation to go with him to his show at the Circle Star Theater in nearby San Carlos. Cosby picked her up at her home in a limousine, according to her complaint, and, on the way to the venue, gave her the wine and a pill that she thought was aspirin. 'Next thing she knew, she was going in and out of consciousness while two men attending to Mr. Cosby were putting her in the limousine,' the complaint said. 'The last thing Ms. Motsinger recalls were flashes of light,' before waking up in her house in nothing but underwear.

Motsinger didn’t consent to Cosby’s sexual contact and, having been rendered unconscious by drugging, she couldn’t consent to it to begin with, according to the complaint. As a consequence of her ordeal, her complaint says she suffered lost wages, medical bills, pain and suffering and emotional distress.

Motsinger filed her suit half a century after the sexual assault – far beyond statutes of limitations in place for such cases. But the #MeToo movement helped usher in a raft of legislation across the country, including in California, that gave victims an opportunity to sue their alleged abusers for crimes committed decades earlier. One such California law allowed Motsinger to file suit against Cosby and, on Monday, win."

She was Cosby'ed in '71 and I bet it was incredibly hard to process. It was the early '70s so who was really going to believe her? Most likely the case would never have made it to trial and if anything leaked it would've turned her into some sort of fucking Hester Prynne. That would have been the end of any sort of professional life she may have hoped to have.

Even without that arcane public attitude, it happens today. Most assault victims don't go to the law because they're afraid or they don't want to talk about it or they just want it to go away. I can understand that once a whole bunch of people brought this shit up she was like fuck, this shit happened to me too, I should maybe tell somebody about it. So she finally had the courage to do it after 51 years.

Of course I'm not saying she should automatically be believed. However I am saying the amount of time it took her to report the assault shouldn't be prima facie evidence of its illegitimacy.
