I pulled-up the weather history for last summer on Weather Underground. The nearest main weather station is at the Portsmouth NH/Pease airport, a few minutes south of us. Here are the 90+ degree days and consecutive hot days for last summer, both in Portsmouth and York (near our house):

So for last summer, the number of 90+ degree days was 17 at the airport, and 15 near my house. If you went right to the coast, it would be much less. And then inland, like Concord NH (near sadchild), it would be a lot more.

There's this misconception that it never gets that hot up here. But the high temps are similar to the rest of the east. It's just that it usually gets cooler at night, because of lower humidity.

Ok, I'm not sure how to get that cool stat sheet you posted but I was able to look at June 2025 for North Lauderdale and we had 24 days of 90 degrees or over.

And here ya go. Much more different (2025 data). BTW, I tried North Lauderdale, but it gave me Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport.

In the middle of the summer (July), the coolest night in FTL is similar to the hottest night in Port. And in the spring (April), there's just no comparison. It's like a whole different climate!

Pretty much the same thing, FLL is about 11 miles away.

I just learned they are they are the Tigers Triple-A team. I also learned that a mudhen is the colloquial name for the American Coot. Coot is 2 letters away cooter and that means vagina so it made me smirk because I am a mature, 42 year old adult.

Staying on topic here..... I decided to start using my pixel pro buds 2 or whatever they're called tonight. First time I popped them in, in a few months. I forgot how small they are compared to the Bose buds.

It prompted me to name them. I'm not sure why I guess because I haven't used them in forever.

If I remember correctly you have that awesome fireplace that's in the center of a room right? I'm assuming it's run on gas (hehehe I'll fuel it for you.....with my farts) and you're not out there lumberjacking it to burn wood. What I'm getting at here is I've lived in FL since I was 21, the vast majority of my adult life where I paid my own power bill so all I know is heat. Does your bill tend to be higher in the summer or winter months?

That may be a stupid question but if I was paying for utilities and up north, I would probably keep my A/C at like 75 and my heat around 69.

Not having that expense means my thermostat stays at 69 year round. Because I like it cold and as you all have seen me demonstrate in the last few posts, I am a child and when I walk by it ans see it at 69 it makes me chuckle.

In general, northern states pay more for heat, while southern states pay more for A/C. Maybe states like Maryland or Colorado split the difference.

Our heating costs are clearly the big expense. But it's difficult to nail-down the actual outlay, because we buy propane just when we need it. In the coldest months, an $800-$900 tank fill will last 2 to 2.5 months, which is very efficient. But depending on when it is, it may require 2 or 3 of those. There's always a fill that gets us through to the following fall. In the winter, our thermostat is set for a daytime baseline of 66, and then we use the fireplace to get to (usually) 68. Since we're wearing winter clothes, we don't need it any higher.

In the summer, our mini-splits give us beautifully cool, quiet, and efficient A/C. It adds a negligible amount to the electric bill. Perhaps $20-$30/month. We always have the thermostat on 71, but there's a regular mode and an eco mode. So we often cycle between those 2, depending on conditions. And we play around with the ceiling fan speed.

Many houses around here are not designed for A/C, so you need a bunch of noisy window units, and it still sucks. Our NH house was like that. We easily doubled our electric bill in the summer. Likewise, some houses go through $500-$800 of oil/gas/propane per month in the winter; especially those big, drafty old historic houses from the 1700s.

This obviously makes sense, especially when talking about you and I on the polar opposite sides of the east coast.

However I take pride in the fact that I have never once turned on the heat in my 26 years in FL. And we do get a few days a year where it is legit cold at night. Nothing like you guys get but below freezing.

The house always stays warm enough from the daytime being in the 60's so I've never been so cold that a blanket isn't enough.

It has been very hot the last few days. I've had to limit my outdoor activity to mornings and evenings. Yesterday, the library had the outdoor concert inside the gallery. Three nice young ladies singing folk tunes, like stuff on the Mary Sue Village Show. It is 90 but feels like 98. We have no nice fluffy clouds in the sky to break the heat. Tough stuff in this part of the country when you are not use to it.

Today it is going to be not quite as hot. Only high of 32c (90f). 37c with humidex but I can smell burnt wood now and the air is thick with smoke. Toronto I am told has the worst air quality of the world today. Yay! We're #1!
