I have 762 songs to rank for the unmadness. I have all your entries and modifications I think. If you have any last minute changes, now is your last chance to make it. If you haven't submitted a list, now is your last chance to indicate you are going to. I will dump the lists I have later tonight or tomorrow morning so you all can verify it is correct.

I do have a question for ranking. In the 70s I gave extra weight to the #1 song of every person. I think it was 300 vs 263 for the #2 spot. Should I do the same here and how much of a weight should I give? 1000? 800? Thoughts?

Here is a suggestion – and please don't tell me what I can do with it. You could add extra points to each of the top five songs on all the lists: five points to the number-one song, four points to the #2 song, three points to the #3 song, two points to the #4 song and one point to the #5 song. Or would that be too much work?

It would be more work on my spreadsheet. RIght now I have formula: '=IF(I3<=0,I3,IF(I3=1,F3,G3-I3+1))' where I3 is the person's rank (in this case me) F3 is the value of the #1 pick. G3 is the number of songs. It was from the 70s so it has the dislike points already in the formula. I would have to add buckets for 2-5 songs. I would make them a bit more exponential as they go up. Maybe extra 1 point for #5, 4 points for #4, 10 points for #3, 18 points for #2 and 40 points for #1. I think it is doeable. Points values are up for discussion. They will be easily adjusted.

The only thing I'd say is that extra weight to #1 of 50 is different than #1 of 200 or 300. So maybe Channel98 has a point, to add weight to a bunch of top songs. Personally, I could've picked among a dozen songs for my #1. My list emphasizes relative groupings, rather than a strict order. So perhaps adding weight to the top 10 would be better.

Oh, and while I have the floor (so to speak), I want to say a few things. First, thanks to IRBS for putting in the work to do this. But also, even before the competition starts, I think the real winner is the reputation of 90s music. With a list of 762 songs, I don't ever want to hear again that 90s music was crap, or that the same 5 or 10 pop/rap artists dominated the decade.

Of course, if you have a real winner, you also have a real loser. And that would be the Billboard Hot 100. The 90s is when it became irrelevant.

To make it a bit cleaner for me, let's do it this way. The {} numbers are my numbers out of a hat and certainly adjustable. The bins are what I want to narrow down on

#1 = Raw Score + {50}
#2 = Raw Score + {40}
#3 = Raw Sore + {30}
#4 = Raw Score + {20}
#5 = Raw Score + {10}
#6-10 = Raw Score + {5}

Thoughts?

ETA: adjusted the {} numbers.

No, not all "90s music was crap" – but much of it was. How about Freakit, Po Pimp, Dazzey Dukes, Splackavellie, Who Dat, Wu-Renegades, Hump Wit It, Whoomp! (There It Is), Whoomp! (There It Went), Whoot There It Is, The Humpty Dance, The Phuncky Feel One, Doo Doo Brown, White Men Can't Jump, James Brown Is Dead, Gett Off, The Devil Came Up To Michigan, Stop The Gunfight, Can't Knock The Hustle, Incarcerated Scarfaces, Ain't No Nigga, Nothin' Move But The Money and Invasion Of The Flat Booty Bitches.

By the way, in the 1990s there were 145 number-one songs on the Billboard Hot 100, 711 top tens, 1,792 top-40 hits and 3,854 top-100 hits. The decade with the most top-100 hits was the 1960s, with 6,874.

In all honesty, take a look at how many of the songs are not listed as favourites on a 70s or 80s countdown as well, There is always crap and for whatever reason billboard likes them. There are also lots of great songs that charted poorly as well. The use of a billboard chart for finding good music was over by 1987 in my opinion.

Among the singles the Ohio Express released after Yummy Yummy Yummy was a top-ten hit in July 1968 are Chewy Chewy, Sweeter Than Sugar, Hot Dog, Wham Bam, Ooh La La, Love Equals Love, Make Love Not War and Pinch Me (Baby Convince Me). Not surprisingly, the Ohio Express were never profiled in an issue of Modern Maturity.

Pardon me, just so I'm sure. The unmadness is a tabulation and analysis of our rankings while the madness is like college basketball. And we are doing the unmadness this time not the madness

We are going to do the unmadness first. The madness will follow. Wolf will either take the full 762 or the nearest multiple of 2 (512) and do the madness.
