I vote for Best Instrumentals of the 1950s-60s-70s-80s. I would include the 1920s-30s-40s but I doubt songs from those years would get many votes. I don't think there are many fans of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Harry James, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Paul Whiteman in 2026.

My thoughts:

Best #1 Song of the ’90s - While I posted many favorite 90s songs in Scotch Sampler, only a few hit #1 on the pop charts. Most of the 90s #1's suck.
Best Instrumentals - I'd like this, but it gets into a gray area between "pop" instrumentals and what's considered jazz or other forms of instrumental music.
Favorite Musicians - There would clearly be no consensus on this.
Movie Soundtracks - I picked this. It's a well-defined category, and one where we all have a common interest.
Other Music Categories - We'd never agree on a type of music.

I agree with Mister scotch: most of the number-one songs of the 1990s suck. Of 156 songs, there are only six that I really like: MMMBop, The Sign, Black Or White, Hold On, More Than Words (which I thought sounded like the Everly Brothers the first time I heard it) and I've Been Thinking About You.

As for movie soundtracks, I like the ones that contain songs written just for the movie, not soundtracks that are just a bunch of old unrelated rock songs thrown together because the producers didn't want to pay anyone to write new songs.

Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit peaked at #6 but went to number one on the alternative rock chart. Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun peaked at #24 and Alice In Chains' No Excuses stalled at #48 but both songs went to number one on the mainstream rock chart. Pearl Jam had three number-one songs on the mainstream rock chart in the 1990s – Daughter, Better Man and Given To Fly – but their biggest hit on the Hot 100 was a remake of J. Frank Wilson's Last Kiss – and it was definitely not grunge.

Yes, I made a typo. The Alice In Chains song is No Excuses – and I have no excuse for the typo! I corrected it.

Last Kiss reached #2 on the June 26 1999 Hot 100 behind Jennifer Lopez's If You Had My Love. Jeremy peaked at #70 on the December 11 1993 Hot 100. A re-release peaked at #79 on the August 19 1995 chart. Smashing Pumpkins' biggest Hot 100 hit was 1979, which peaked at #12 on the March 30 1996 chart. Stone Temple Pilots' biggest Hot 100 hit was Interstate Love Song, which peaked at #18 on the December 17 1994 chart.

I like all that stuff. And Anita O"Day, Francis Langford, Rosemary Clooney and all the Taylor Swift s and Laufey s of that era that would sing with the Big Bands. But I guess I will go with Movies

I like the Boswell Sisters – Connee, Martha and Helvetia. They had twenty top-20 hits in the 1930s including Dinah, Alexander's Ragtime Band, Cheek To Cheek, When I Take My Sugar To Tea, You Oughta Be In Pictures and I Found A Million Dollar Baby. Here is The Object Of My Affection, their only number-one hit, from January 1935. This was co-written by Jimmie Greer, who leads the orchestra on the recording.

Instrumentals that spent the most weeks at number one:

Frenesi – Artie Shaw, 13 (1940)
Heartaches – Ted Weems, 13 (1947)
In The Mood – Glenn Miller, 13 (1940)
The Third Man Theme – Anton Karas, 11 (1950)
The Third Man Theme – Guy Lombardo, 11 (1950)
Whispering – Paul Whiteman, 11 (1920)
Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White – Pérez Prado, 10 (1955)
Theme From A Summer Place – Percy Faith, 9 (1960)
Tuxedo Junction – Glenn Miller, 9 (1940)

Whispering sounds like some of the background music in Laurel & Hardy's 1930s comedies.

I’m going to be straight-up honest here and give my thoughts on each theme.

Best #1 Song of the ’90s
What IRBS meant to say: there were tons of #1 songs!

Best Instrumentals
I doubt I’d know much about “Best Instrumentals” music.

Favorite Musicians
This could be a great category. There are tons of artists who are way better than any member of The Beatles!

If this is argumentative or fighting words, then bring it. I’ve been to well over 300+ concerts, and I guarantee most of them can beat The Beatles. It mainly comes down to the wrong people favoring them.

Movie Soundtracks
This could be a fun theme, as long as no The Beatles film soundtracks knock out way better films. One of my personal favorite soundtracks is from Top Gun.

Other Music Categories
I think this could be a great music category if some people would expand their music library. For example, we could include many different versions of rock music, pop, and one of my personal favorites: country music.
