Best #1 Song of the ’90s
not too many good #1s as mentioned.
Best #1 Song of the ’90s
What IRBS meant to say: there were tons of #1 songs!
Smells Like Teen Spirit – who knew "teen spirit" has an odor? – was released as a single on September 10 1991. It peaked at #6 on the January 11 1992 Hot 100. It went to number one on the alternative rock chart (November 23 1991), reached #7 on the mainstream rock chart (February 1 1992) and got to #7 on the British singles chart (November 30 1991).

After looking and posting. I may have to agree with IRBS not too many good #1s as mentioned.

We didn't bend the rules for the 70s and 80s #1 hits. Maybe we should for the 90s and possibly go back to revisit and challenge the 70s and 80s #1 hit songs?

Below are some great songs that didn't make #1 Billboard Hot 100 list.

Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (1991)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Under The Bridge" (1991)
Oasis - "Wonderwall" (1995)
Third Eye Blind - "Semi-Charmed Life" (1997)
Backstreet Boys - "I Want It That Way" (1999)
TLC - "Waterfalls" (1994)

Believe was number one on the Hot 100 for four weeks in March-April 1999, It was #3 on the adult contemporary chart for four weeks. It couldn't get above Savage Garden's Truly Madly Deeply and Céline Dion's My Heart Will Go On.

Seven of my favorite 1990s songs peaked at #2:

Right Here Right Now – Jesus Jones (July 27 1991)
Every Heartbeat – Amy Grant (August 17 1991)
Tears In Heaven – Eric Clapton (March 28 1992)
All That She Wants – Ace Of Base (November 6 1993)
All I Wanna Do – Sheryl Crow (October 8 1994)
Lovefool – Cardigans (March 1 1997)
You Were Meant For Me – Jewel (April 19 1997)

Yeah, it's a shitty list of songs, which is why I didn't vote for it. The 90's is when things like the internet, iPods, and a divergent choice of radio stations made the Billboard pop chart superfluous. If you liked rock/folk/grunge/alternative/adult contemporary/indie music, you didn't need to listen to top 40 radio. There's like 3 songs on that list that I'd give a "meh" to.

The same can be said of 70s and 80s. When I did my 70s list, I skipped a whole bunch of songs which I consider better than the #1 songs that I would eventually include. The difference is that a greater number of the #1 songs in the 70s were actually good songs.

A super quick glance looks like about 24 songs that are either good or fun nostalgia picks for me.

This could end up being a Madness Speed round.

If everybody gave me their top 20 90s songs (any chart position just on a chart in the 1990s) in ranked order, I can come up with a list of about 64. If a bit over we would have vote offs for the lower ranked songs. Once we have 64 songs in a ranked order, we can do a traditional madness of just 2 songs against each other straight tournament with no second chances to do a madness winner. So you would start with unmadness and result in Madness.

I think it's like everything else in the 70s, versus today. Movies were in the theater. TV shows were on the big 3 networks. Music was on the radio. If you liked it, you bought the album or recorded on cassette.

By the 90s, everything was narrow-cast. That's why they had alternative, because it was the alternative to music for 12 year old girls. From that point on, I never had to subject myself to that crap. I was able to listen to adult music exclusively. That's why the 70s #1s and 90s #1s are not the same.

This is probably the first Madness where the list kind of sucks. I know we don’t all agree on most of these songs.

There are usually 10–11 users participating. I like the idea of everyone submitting their top 20 songs. We could easily come up with 100 songs and then whittle the list down to our top 64.

I also wouldn’t mind seeing what our #1 song for each year would be.

tI's simple – I like fun uptempo pop songs. I really loved the MMMBop remix that was played on Radio Disney but it was never commercially available. Here is a live acoustic version from 2022. Isaac was 42, Taylor was 39 and Zac was 36.
