see if you consider the Dartells' Hot Pastrami to be an instrumental
Mashed potatoes
Yeah, hey, oh...
Hot pastrami
Yeah, hey, oh...
Baby, shake that thing
Yeah, hey, oh...
Baby, one more time
Yeah, hey, oh...
Baby one more time
Yeah, hey, oh...

I'm on the fence on this one. Good question. Because if this is instrumental, then "Holiday Road" could be called into question - and I don't consider that an instrumental.

I found out long ago it's a long way down the holiday road
Holiday road
Jack be nimble, Jack be quick. Take a ride on the West Coast kick
Holiday road
I found out long ago it's a long way down the holiday road
Holiday road

Though I do consider "Block Rockin' Beats" to be an instrumental..

Back with another one of those block rockin' beats
We're 'bout ready to rock steady
We're 'bout ready to rock steady
Back with another one of those block rockin' beats

So you got me in a quandary, nicely done!

The Silvertones, a southern California surf-rock band, released only two singles before breaking up. Get It/Bathsheba was first released by Los Angeles label Goliath in 1963 and was released nationally by Valiant in March 1964. Waitin' For My Girl/Seven-Piece Bathing Suit was released by Burbank label Sweet 16. Part of the lyrics of that last song are "She wore ribbons in her hair....ribbons on her arms.....nothing was as cute as her seven-piece bathing suit." They never explained what the the seven pieces are. Anyway, here is Get It, written by Tom Dimuzio. It's an instrumental but it includes screams and a repetition of two words. Guess what they are. Go ahead, guess!

Yeah I call those instrumentals too. Like "Tequila". A word or three doesn't count in my book.

Both of those are classics, can't believe they hadn't already been posted!
How about Mellow Yellow's "Oh Yeah" song. It's not real lyrics but it is vocals. How would you classify it?

I have a 3-CD set called Complete Pop Instrumental Hits Of The '60s, Volume 1. It includes the original versions of all 81 instrumentals that made the Top 100 in 1960. Among them are The Madison Time, a #30 hit in May 1960 by the Ray Bryant Combo and Eddie Morrison. How the heck can anyone call this an instrumental? Because the words are spoken, not sung? This is definitely not an instrumental. It's not even an "almostrumental."

Leroy Anderson (1908-75) was an arranger for the Boston Pops Orchestra and wrote many songs and light orchestral pieces, most notably Blue Tango, Sleigh Ride and The Syncopated Clock. The latter song was a #12 hit for Anderson and his Pops Concert Orchestra in 1951. Of all the songs Anderson wrote, his favorite was The Typewriter, recorded in 1953 with the Boston Pops Orchestra. It never made the pop charts. It's been recorded by nine other artists, including the Ralph Flanagan Orchestra in 1953, the Werner Müller Orchestra in 1964, Rawhide in 2000 and Jelani Eddington in 2006. Meco included it in a Hooked On Leroy Anderson medley on his 1983 album Hooked On Instrumentals. The typewriter is a percussion instrument. Who knew?

We are playing that in our community band.

Here's the big hit instrumental from the 1972 Casey countdown
