When I moved into my house, with its wood stove, I subscribed to the Concord Monitor to have newspaper to start fires with. I didn't renew. Later, being short on newspapers, I subscribed to the Union Leader (Manchester).

Mysteriously, the same day the Union Leader basket was installed on my mailbox pole, the Concord Monitor one was unceremoniously ripped off of it, leaving only a metal bracket.

I let that subscription run out. A while later, I resubscribed to the Concord Monitor.

I haven't been subscribed for years now. There are enough free papers around to handle the chore.
IMO, the only thing the Union Leader is good for is starting fires.

Back in the early 90s I helped found the Manchester NH chapter of Guardian Angels (red-beret street patrol). My room mate had been patrolling in Boston and was asked by a Manchester landlord to start it in Manch. After helping him set it up, I was asked to be 2nd in command. The Concord Monitor put us on the front page with a positive headline (something like "Angels To Stand Guard"). The Union Leader went the controversy route (I forget the headline, but it was the typical "Uh oh here comes trouble" alarming headline). Over time, they kept up with the whole "OMG TURMOIL CHAOS HATE AND PROBLEMS?!" headline bullshit, skewing it toward an almost tabloid feel each time they did a story on us.

Later, my room mate was asked to resign and I was made co-leader with another guy. During my time in charge, the scandal of Curtis Sliwa (the national leader) having faked some crimes for publicity in his early days dropped and Union Leader came to me for an interview. I told him I couldn't do the interview until tomorrow. Then the Concord Monitor showed up and I gave them the exclusive. Because fuck you.

That was what you get for canceling your Union Leader subscription!
Well boys this morning is turning out to be much better than yesterday. Eagles are locked in to the number two seed facing the Packers next Sunday and I am nicely settled in with my first of many morning Sun Sentinels.
Could you take a full sized picture of the comics for us???????

(JK - Don't do that. We don't want to get a cease and desist letter from The Sentinel.)

The paper has definitely changed since 2019. The Monday paper was two sections, the front page and sports. However, while the paper was smaller than what I remember in 2019, it wasn't that much smaller. The front page did also include local and business and obituaries and classifieds and stuff like that. It was just all grouped into the front page. And sports included comics and weather and stuff like that as well.

So while the paper has shrunk since I read it while Hendrik was getting home delivery, it's not as dire as I have heard others say. And for about a dollar per day I am not complaining at all about the product I'm receiving. I know it was only my first day so of course I read it more than I'm probably going to a month from now, but if I average reading 10 to 20 minutes a day of the paper I will more than get my monies worth out of this subscription.

I'm going top those Goose shows so that's a fun not old person thing to do. And in very many aspects of my like I act like a teenager.

But I really enjoy the paper. I usually like it best reading it at my desk at work but this afternoon I'm watching Alien: Romulus and I just finished the front page. Now it's onto the local section. Those are usually the 2 sections I read by far the most.

This is turning into an enjoyable Sunday off.

Also who needs the NYT when the Sun Sentinel takes all the good parts from The New York Times anyway and puts it in their own paper:

This is the type of local section news I'm looking for.

Seriously though it's shit like this and all the stuff about like local crimes that make me like the local section probably the best of the whole paper.
