I've had my CDs in two chests for years. But even that's not enough space so everything after the letter 'P' is in shoe boxes on top of the CDs early in the alphabet. They probably weigh a ton. And that's after having a yard sale 10 years ago and getting rid of over 100 of them! And I have a big box with more CDs I don't need in my collection anymore (old albums where I only like a few songs, so I just have those on mp3 now).

which required me to lay out ALL of my alphabetized records in order to add in the ones that I hadn't had shelf space for previously (around eight small U-Haul boxes worth). It took me almost eight hours to reorganize everything. My back was sore for a day or two. I hope I don't have to move again anytime soon!
I run into dilemmas when I try to alphabetize. I know that the Dave Mathews Band is under D (not M), but I have artists like Ty Segall, who releases albums under his name (S for Segall), but also under Ty Segall Band. But I don't want one under S and one under T. And then there are solo artists that put out albums that are essentially with the members of the band they are from.

When the Mrs and I were moving into our first place together, she said something like it was probably stupid to move some of her things. I made a point out of saying that it was hers and that I wasn't going to tell her what she should do with it. It could have gone badly, but at least I've never had to try to talk her out of getting rid of my stuff.

My CDs are no longer alphabetized but they are in iTunes. I standardize the name. Songs that got burned as John Cougar or John Cougar Mellencamp for example all get converted to John Mellencamp. Which falls under J.

Alphabetizing a name by 1st letter - as if it was a title - is something computers do. Maybe @Channel98 knows the name for that type of sorting, but it's not how humans sort. Imagine going into a record store, and having things sorted like that.

My CDs are chaos right now. I should at least try to sort them by which ones I’ve re-ripped and those that still need to be. It might be easier to get motivated to keep ripping the rest.

I forgot ol fla fla released the beast and only took back 3,000 bucks. Ouch. Double ouch. Curious how much he spent on sound equipment. At the music store yesterday a CD I bought a few months ago was 12.99 down from 13.99 and the reeses peeces was 52.29. hahaha, ya can't wait to hear the sound quality of that modern peeece of music.

Yeah, when I go to a "tourist" town, sometimes I'll end up at a record store like that, like earlier this year in Boulder CO. Here's my rule: I don't buy new vinyl records for myself. I'll look in the bargain bin for something classic that's cheap. But sometimes I get new vinyl as gifts from people, like my kids.

It's rare I buy any voinyl. I have about 50 or 60 old records.

As for new releases, pretty sure it's none (not noine). I mainly get original pressings of old stuff that has a song or two you can't get anywhere else. Non-album tracks only ever released on vinyl or remixes only released on vinyl - like Red Hot Chili Peppers "Fight Like A Brave (Mofo Mix)" and Faith No More "We Care A Lot (Make Love Not War Mix)".

As for new releases of old stuff, just a few - like the remastered Cure Disintegration from 2010 and the remastered Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine from 2011 for example.

I usually try to default to the last name when alphabetizing. So a record by Jeff Beck and one by the Jeff Beck Group would be next to each other, under B. And I keep everything together and don't like to separate by genre, as that can get complicated quickly. I wish record stores would just do it this way too. I'll separate out all the various artists and soundtracks though.

Jeff Beck Group is a group name, Jeff Beck is a person, When my CDs were alphabetized, Jeff Beck would have been under "Beck, Jeff" while the group would be under "Jeff Beck Group".

If I was alphabetizing today I would redo my order to the same way iTunes does it. Less ambiguity.

Let's ask a real librarian: I will go upstairs now and confront the librarian and she what she says. Aside from all this I separate out by year released.

Yes, and card holders for backup finding.
Which reminds me….
Make sure you have your music backed up to at least 2 different drives.
If one drive crashes, you don’t want to be where I was when I lost most of my MP3s.
It‘s been about 10 years, and I still don’t have all of it ripped again.
There are some that I’ll never get back.

I'm old school and have a "MUSICPREP" folder where my latest stuff sits. Each mp3 gets a 128 kpbs bitrate, volume gain normalization to 95db and id3 tagged. Once I have 4gb of mp3s I burn them to a DVD and then move them into my main collection.

I will probably get an external USB drive and copy it all onto that at some point though.
