Sadchild's "high fives" (every artist I like at least five songs from)

Spineshank_16_9_1581553637.jpg

Spineshank

Genre: nu-metal

Discovered: don't remember, "New Disease".

Other: "New Disease" was on the 3000 Miles To Graceland soundtrack, but that's not how I discovered them. My band opened for the band that the lead singer formed after he quit this group, but they weren't as good.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Synthetic
2. New Disease
3. Can't Be Fixed
4. Smothered
5. Beginning Of The End

Spose

Genre: hip hop

Discovered: Looking for new music while writing a weekly music column for 411mania.com, "I'm Awesome"

Other: The very last set of reviews I did for 411mania included the song "I'm Awesome" by Maine rapper Spose. I trashed it. My opening line was, "Just when you think pop music can't get any worse, a song like this comes along and lands on the Hot 100.". In it, I even called him a prick: "Spose even goes so far as to say he has the swagger of a cripple. What? People with physical disabilities can't have swagger? Prick." And it only got rougher from there.

He commented on my review personally, "hey man it's spose... thanks for the support... hey it's actually a pan flute not a recorder on my earth-ruining, apocalypse of a hit single. go buy it on itunes only 99 cents, bub!!!" I ended up emailing him soon after, saying something like "Congrats on your song making the top 40, obviously a lot of people liked it a lot more than I did." His response was a bit rougher than his original public comment, kinda like "I have a hit and your band doesn't" (I promoted my band in my articles, and he evidently noticed). I responded with something about how important I think good lyrics are, and sent him lyrics to my song "Medicated Society" (anti-psych drug rant).

I never heard back, but his lyrics seemed to change after that -- moving from drugs and dumb jokes to serious topics and good messages. The next song I heard from him was "Jimmy!" (anti-bullying song). I thought it was great and still do. Then I heard "Nobody" (an uplifting song about chasing your dreams). Another great one. So in the back of my mind, I wonder if our little back-n-forth inspired him? I'll probably never know. And he'd probably never admit it if I did inspire a change in his writing...

HIGH FIVE:

1. Jimmy!
2. Lies Song (with Wax)
3. Nobody (with Watsky)
4. Bill Murray
5. Cooped Up

Sprung Monkey

Genre: rock, alt rock, funk rock

Discovered: don't remember, "Get 'Em Outta Here"

Other: Most of their songs are hard rockin' and upbeat with a twist of fun. Good for parties (bbq, billiards, etc). Gotta love lyrics like:

Granny in her sports car (Get 'em outta here)
To the label with the crook deals (Get 'em outta here)
To the bands that play with no feel (Get 'em outta here)
To the sailor in the high heels (Get 'em outta here)
Itchy faced crackheads (Get 'em outta here)
You got the flatulating fat chicks (Get 'em outta here)

HIGH FIVE:

1. What's That You Say
2. Get 'Em Outta Here
3. Coconut (Harry Nilsson cover)
4. Party Like A Rock Star
5. Mr Funny Face

Stabbing Westward

Genre: industrial rock (except album #4 which is alt rock with some pop rock)

Discovered: Rock Monthly Video compilation, "Nothing".

Other: Best known for their song "Save Yourself" but I like at least a dozen of their songs more than that one. Saw them live in 1994 opening for Killing Joke. Instead of watching KJ, I got to meet the band backstage after their set. They were just like they appear in their music videos: the singer was alone looking stressed and upset off to the side while the others were all cool, happy dudes hanging out together.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Shame
2. Lies
3. The Thing I Hate
4. What Do I Have To Do
5. Throw

Static X

Genre: industrial rock/metal

Discovered: don't remember, "Push It"

Other: Saw 'em in '99. The singer and the bass player eventually got into legal stuff that got ugly. The frontman had to pay the bassist to tour under the band name, but then couldn't keep touring because he needed surgery. He asked the bass player if he could stop paying for use of the name to get the surgery and recover and the guy was like "FU pay me". But then when the frontman died, the bass player toured as Static X with a look-alike/sound-alike of the frontman. Shitty all around.

"He's, like, 'Boohoohoo, you have a hernia. Sorry. Give me my money.' I told him, 'Dude, give me a few months off to recuperate, and then we'll start up the deal again.' 'Cause I wanted to keep touring. But he wouldn't do it. Apparently, he was really pissed off because I said in some interviews that STATIC-X were never, like, all great buddies and friends and all that kind of stuff, and we never hung out."

HIGH FIVE:

1. I'm With Stupid
2. Push It
3. Bled For Days
4. Cold
5. Forty Ways

I like that album. It’s too bad they couldn’t get along.

And I wish I would have had the guts to do something fun like that with my hair back in the day.

Steel Panther

Genre: glam rock/metal (parody of)

Discovered: co-worker, "The Burden Of Being Wonderful"

Other: It's like Spinal Tap, but for the mid/late 80s instead of the early 80s.

HIGH FIVE:

1. The Burden Of Being Wonderful
2. Fuck Everybody/Fuck 2020 (same song, the second one has lyrics rewritten about Covid)
3. Gloryhole
4. I Got What You Want
5. Poontang Boomerang

The video is a hoot, so I put it here instead of just audio:

Steely Dan

Genre: jazzy prog rock

Discovered: my father, the whole Aja album but "Black Cow" stands out as probably the first one I got hooked on.

Other: As covered in other threads, my father used to play this album and I really liked it (and their song "FM") as a kid. Rediscovered the album later in life. Haven't been much of a fan of their other stuff but exposure here is changing that.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Deacon Blues
2. Black Cow
3. Peg
4. Josie
5. Aja

Stereomud

Genre: heavy rock/nu-metal

Discovered: don't remember, "Pain"

Other: Saw them open for Disturbed and Drowning Pool (before Disturbed was selling out arenas, and Drowning Pool with their original singer RIP). Still a fan of this band's vocalist Erik Rogers, who was later in Soundevice, Love Said No, Dangerous New Machine and My Therapy. But Stereomud was his best IMO.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Pain
2. Lost Your Faith
3. Steppin Away
4. Leave (Backup)
5. How We Stand

That's not a bad song. The parody shtick can get a bit old for me sometimes, so I don't usually get into much of their stuff.

Decent song, but not a great band name.

Steve Winwood

Genre: pop rock, rock and roll

Discovered: don't remember but probably FM, either "When You See A Chance" or "Valerie"

Other: Love the album Back In The High Life, and like probably a half-dozen of his other songs outside of that. Outside of his solo work, "Gimme Some Lovin'" is fantastic. Not really hip to Traffic or Blind Faith (aside from its controversial album cover).

HIGH FIVE:

1. Back in the High Life Again
2. My Love's Leaving
3. The Finer Things
4. Valerie
5. Higher Love

Kinda out of left field for you, but yeah, I covered him a while back, that album is great. Started with Arc of a Diver. And I did a thing on Traffic too.

Stevie Nicks

Genre: pop rock, rock and roll, AC

Discovered: probably FM, either "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" or "Leather And Lace" I would assume.

Other: I was only a casual fan of her solo work in the 80s. My 3 favs from her are from the 2010s, though #1 was originally written for Rumours and #3 was written in 1980.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Secret Love
2. For What It's Worth
3. 24 Karat Gold
4. Leather And Lace (with Don Henley)
5. Talk To Me

Stevie Wonder

Genre: pop, r&b, soul, funk

Discovered: no clue

Other: I don't know his "Amazing Little Boy Wonder" early days music. The oldest song title I recognize from him is "My Cherie Amour" from '69. Another amazing musician that I don't actively listen to, just passively as it finds me.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Superstition
2. Part-Time Lover
3. Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours
4. Do I Do
5. Sir Duke
