There's a story I didn't tell, when I was talking about my stereo equipment in my thread. Those big Snell speakers were being sold by Steven Stone, a reviewer/editor for Stereophile magazine. They were installed in his Allston/Brighton loft apartment by Peter Snell himself, as his reference monitors. After 3 years, it was time to move on, and that's where I came in.I listened to So a lot, and it sounded great.
I went to Steven's loft to see about buying the Snells. I brought some CDs with me, including So, Brothers in Arms, and Joe Jackson's Body and Soul. Back in '89, hardcore audiophiles poo-pooed CDs (although he had a wall of them). I wanted to hear Don't Give Up, so he reluctantly stuck my CD into his portable CD player, and when the song started, he said "wow, that's really hot", which I thought was a compliment. But it meant that the sound was very bright, glassy, and harsh. He then retrieved his LP version of So, and dropped in onto his $20k VPI turntable. It sounded a whole lot better.
Of course, I ended up buying the speakers.
